mex-16v Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 right ive got my mk2 body all welded up and ready for paint but b4 it goes i want 2 mock up the engine and gearbox, but i dont know what lump to use, i want n/a 16v engine with out spendin a bomb so not bda, n/a cossy or warrior, so am left with 2ltr zetec,xe or duratec, what do u guys think of these engines
BaileyMex Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 If you have only those three to go for, i'd say go for a Ford Engine, and the Duratec to be different
mex-16v Posted February 20, 2006 Author Report Posted February 20, 2006 If you have only those three to go for, i'd say go for a Ford Engine, and the Duratec to be different what other engines are there that can b droped strighted in with out 2many serious mods
BaileyMex Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 isnt the duratec a mazda engine? Not sure mate.
BaileyMex Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 what other engines are there that can b droped strighted in with out 2many serious mods What is it to be uswd for? everyday drive or weekend fun toy or track day racer?
tim Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 yea the duratec is a ford/mazda engine, duratec is in newer ford but some engines badged as duratec are zetecs lol like in the focus rs, duratec is chain whilst zetec is belt driven
perry Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 not a lot is known about the duratecs so maybe type it into google to see if theres any info xe has the most power out the box but it needs a pricey bellhousing and it doesnt have a dizzy , so it would need an ecu of sometype , if your good with electrickery look into the megajolt kits , the good xe lumps can cost a few £££ too zetec will bolt straight onto a ford gearbox and all the conversion stuff is readily available from places like retroford ( dave colledge ) this can be run on the original ford edis stuff with a bit of tweeking , all the relevant stuff can be sourced in a scrapyard or even buy a mk5 escort which will have most of the bits needed , give dave a call and see how much his water rail , alternator relocation stuff etc currently costs . http://www.zetecescorts.bravehost.com/ they will all need an exhaust manifold costing around £200 id go for a zetec , but then there is one sat in a mk2 outside the house
mex-16v Posted February 20, 2006 Author Report Posted February 20, 2006 weekend toy, goin on tours around europe/ireland etc, some tracks day but nothing to serious, dont want massive bhp race spec engine that drinks petrol and undriverable, i didnt look at a pinto because they do like to drink petrol and are heavy for the power they put out
Admin Mk2Jo Posted February 20, 2006 Admin Report Posted February 20, 2006 I have voted Zetec - to keep it Ford but the XE engine is a good/reliable/cheap engine. Don't know anything about the Duratecs.
perry Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 ive never seen any xe stuff in a scrapyard but there will be zetecs in smacked up mondeos/escorts for years yet if need be a zetec lump can be picked up for very little ££ all the cost is in the conversion bits and manifold ( but any engine would need a manifold to suit rwd )
mex-16v Posted February 20, 2006 Author Report Posted February 20, 2006 got any pictures of ur zetec install perry, was it fairly easy to do, any trickly bits
perry Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 its princess ghias/zetecescort6 i helped a bit ( stood around mostly ) http://www.oldskoolford.co.uk/phpBB2/vi ... php?t=1922 its a 1600 using a 32/36 dgav and the edis module it doesnt run great ( i think the engine is on its way out ) its a relativly cheap build , all the money is in the conversion bits ( a water rail is about £180ish , but they can be made )
mex-16v Posted February 20, 2006 Author Report Posted February 20, 2006 looks very nice in that engine bay how come they went with the 32/36 weber and not stick with the oringal throttle body set up, the electrics will b the biggest head ake for me
perry Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 good point ill have to ask james later , i think its because the standard injection stuff isnt much good and it eliminated the wiring needed to run it we spent a fair few hours lent over it all with wires in hands "wtf does this wire do " i know fook all about wiring but we got it done in the end , its fairly simple really also engine mounts can be bought/made to fit the zetec straight to the escort cross member . the xe needs mounts made to bolt it to the chassis rails
Mk 1 Mark Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 Love the XE ...Go for it...But i also like a Duratec...The ST170 has an all steel bottom end which is a goos start. And would be different..But i think its a case of what come up first complete for a RWD conversion... XE out the Box is an excellent conversion
mex-16v Posted February 20, 2006 Author Report Posted February 20, 2006 bda cost silly money, st170 lump is a zetec but badged as a duratec i believe
Jimsiss Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 go duratec as it can produce more power than a standard YB turbo with only a few tweeks in N/A form!
mex-16v Posted February 20, 2006 Author Report Posted February 20, 2006 been lookin around for duratec and there expensive lumps 2 buy, nearly fell over when lookin at the burton catalogue
perry Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 ah burtons prices the duratec was in the ford ranger i believe
BaileyMex Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 The current Ford Ranger has a 2.5 turbo diesel
perry Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 cool , ive been thinking of getting a mk1 cortina and having a decent diesel in it
BaileyMex Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 LOL @ 109ps & 258lb of torque it should slide all over the place PMSL
perry Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 no tax to pay and if i get friendly with the takeaway , cheap veggie oil
