dannyboy Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 If I had the money I would go with a duratec, surely there will some focus (2002 >) that has been pranged. They have really good tuning potential.I'veonly done a little bit of reading on them (if you can get hold of a 2.3 then 300+ is achieveable). This months (or last ?) Practical Performance Car(PPC) Mag has a "how 2" on tuning them. They are really strong, fairly lightweight, rev to 8k standard and 150bhp. That can easily see 200bhp with a few mods (due to ghey restrictive exhaust /emmissions friendly stuff) HTH. Ill update tonight the specifics when I get in from work and browse the magazine
RChambers Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 If you can afford it go for the duratec. Its still a new engine in old fords so the conversion parts are only just starting to come through. On throttle bodies a standard engine can make 200bhp so its going to be really reliable as its still unstressed. Zetecs are wicked engines (got one myself) but don't give out quite the power of the duratec (160-170bhp with throttle bodies). Good thing about zetecs are conversion parts are off the shelf bits now so easy to do and you will be tripping over zetecs in any scrap yard you visit. XE is a wonderful engine but its getting difficult to find (only in the sporty vauxpoos) and there is no need now that Ford has caught up engine wise. If you get lucky and get some cheap XE conversion parts then go for it but if you are paying full whack for bits might as well be a zetec or duratec depending on budget.
mex-16v Posted February 21, 2006 Author Report Posted February 21, 2006 cheers guys, am prob goin 2 go wth a silver top zetec or an st170, unless i can find a crashed mondeo or focus with a duratec
RallyOrange Posted February 21, 2006 Report Posted February 21, 2006 The Silver Top Zetec E Is a spanking motor, and as has been said, will be available from breakers for many moons to come. I have an XR3i 16v 130 Spec 1800 that I am rebuilding (Not Old Skool I know) with carb's etc etc and It will see just over the 200bhp mark easy, however I voted Duratec as they are a phenomenal unit. Small, light, 300 ponies available fron the 2.3 (As already mentioned) but I bet you could pick up a 2.0 from a Mk3 Mondy from a breakers, take it to 2.1/2.2, get the right set of cam's, manifold and throttle bodies, and fit it for £2k. The main expense would be the throttle bodies. It would fit to a Type 9 with a custom clutch plate and adaptor and would be magazine material if done right. Lovely Engines. BTW, the ST170 IS a Duratec, not a Zetec. To help, there are 2 Zetec's, the Zetec SE and the Zetec E (Silver top and Black Top) both are brill, and the Zetec SE was developed with Yamaha (But are poo for RWD). Whatever you choose, good luck (But a Vaux engine in a Ford is sacriligde as far as I am concerned!! ) Regard's Ryan @ RallyOrange
BIGKEV Posted February 21, 2006 Report Posted February 21, 2006 Go for a Zetec buddy - The parts as perry says will be availible forever and a day - I have a modified Sump If you want it - Sump has to be different so I believe.
tim Posted February 21, 2006 Report Posted February 21, 2006 BTW, the ST170 IS a Duratec, not a Zetec. its a zetec lump badged as a duratec and the same in the rs, bloody fords lol ive voted zetec cheap and plentlful, duratec are still expensive to buy and install
johnboy Posted February 21, 2006 Report Posted February 21, 2006 XE anyday, and if you use a 1.8 Manta getrag box and modify a tin sump they're not too expensive either!
