dont think ther is an issue with height, as for side exits, i think they have to be on a slight downwards angle, but i am not sure, i know a lot of people will say they are illegal and an MOT fail, but they are not

b. a silencer in such condition, or of such a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehicle with a silencer in average condition.

why do bloody chavs and ther silly backboxes not fail then!!

so if i had a side exit pipe that came out the window at pedestrian head hight it would pass then?

I ask because im not sure whether i go for a side exit or a high level rear exit (number plate height)

do you know where all this stuff is written down in black and white? or do you have to become an MoT tester to know what the rules of the game are?

Construction and Use regulations is what you need to be looking at.

I know that the test has tightened up with the whole computer link thing but dont know how far it has gone would love to know definite tho before doing the exhaust on mine as mot is due!

i got failed by one MOT station on my cherry bomb, but another centre passed it

i always believed they couldnt fail it if they couldnt test it?? ie with a decibel meter?

As said above mate, its down to the testers discression when compared to a similar vehicle.

I'm not that fussed but if its stupid loud (no boxes etc) then i'd prob fail it but otherwise its all good

it is down to the individual tester if they think it is excessive, the whole computer thing hasn't changed the mot test at all,its only the paper work & average time & what ever car is on your computer has to be on your mot ramp,if a car came in with a cherry bomb you would have to asses if it was excessively loud compared to an exhaust system in average cond

this is the reason for rejection above similar veh with a silencer in average cond,so if you had cherry bomb on a cortina mk1 & a cortina mk2 as long as it wasen't unreasonably above the level expected, but that is down to the tester,i would pass & advise aslong as my ears wern't bleedin  basicly take it & see there is not set level & they dont give you anything to measure the niose with so its up to the tester :P
