stuartp Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 my escort let me down this morning by just not starting ;-( turning over fine, almost went a couple of times but just wouldn't start was booked into the garage today too for various bits and bobs - sorry tickover anyway - what tricks and tips do you guys have that help yours get going? i always have the clutch down and give a couple of little pumps on the gas before i turn the key
antz Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 all depends on time of year....you could of just flooded it. at this time of year i pull the choke right out, crank it and itll splutter...then ill crank it again and itll fire up fine. in summar i usually just give it about 1/4 choke and pump the accelerator once then it fires up.
FredTransit Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 Dip the clutch, I always do it with the diesels, was told it reduces the resistance at the flywheel, every little bit helps.
stuartp Posted November 4, 2008 Author Report Posted November 4, 2008 i'm presuming (hoping) the pinto from the sierra has automatic choke (at least, the choke has been removed from the dashboard in mine) so if i did flood it, am i right in thinking it wouldn't take long for the petrol to evaporate and it be a ok to try again
antz Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 i'm presuming (hoping) the pinto from the jelly mould has automatic choke (at least, the choke has been removed from the dashboard in mine) so if i did flood it, am i right in thinking it wouldn't take long for the petrol to evaporate and it be a ok to try again give it 20mins or so and try again. we all do it...i do it often
Guest cortinamad-gonetoo Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 itll still start if youve flooded it just dont give it any throttle if its auto choke which works via the heater hose going through the choke then when you first get to the car on a cold morning you press the accelerator to the floor slowly and let it release maybe two or three times then just turn the ignition with out pressing the throttle
MK2Ed Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 Incorrect float level can cause flooding... just needs adjusting Have u got enough fuel in there don't laugh many have done it
john_3.0s Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 if you have flooded it and its an autochoke press and hold the throttle right down on the floor and crank it over, may take 10 seconds but they will normally run eventually once it has spat all the fuel out. the worse thing you can do is keep proding at the peddle as the accelerator pumps in the carb just keep pumping fuel in.
mk1super Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 For my mk1 xflow on 40s Turn on the fuel let it run for bout 5 seconds, then pump pedal couple of times, half throttle then start cranking over, if that fails its foot hard to the floor and turn over, i dont bother with the choke as last time it flooded the fooker choke and doing the above pumping lol , when she fires i let her warm up for 5 mins with the odd blip to help/annoy neighbours. If the above fails then its out with the jumpleads/booster pack just to give battery a bit of help.
stuartp Posted November 4, 2008 Author Report Posted November 4, 2008 Incorrect float level can cause flooding... just needs adjustingHave u got enough fuel in there don't laugh many have done it plenty of fuel unless that's all leaked out like my brake fluid has
stuartp Posted November 4, 2008 Author Report Posted November 4, 2008 i must have just flooded it hope so anyway - will find out if it starts when i get home i suppose
Stu_B Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 My Anglia starts after a second or 2 without any problems everytime, once it's warm it fires up instantly.... the best thing about the whole bloody car
Takeshi Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 In the cold mornings its - 1. Nearly full choke 2. Prod the gas pedal a couple times 3. Turn the key and she nearly always fires first time, if not second go. In the summer, no choke and just turn the key
stuartp Posted November 5, 2008 Author Report Posted November 5, 2008 i must have flooded it started when i got home from work and started fine this morning div!
vibrating_Cake Posted November 5, 2008 Report Posted November 5, 2008 no choke on my 45's, just give it a a full pump, turn the key and pump when it splutters job done!
