garyv6100e Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 Hi all Went to start my car today for the 1st time in a month and it is sucking to much air through the carb the car does run but give it any throttle and all it seems to do is suck air , it did this the last time i used it but then it was a bitterly cold night and i thought it was to do with air temp . any idea's whats going on , its a 38dgas chokes are free to move (manual) and using a piper cross filter
Supercharged Nat Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 im not sure what you mean by sucking air? are you saying your suffering from carb freeze? OR is the accelerator pump not working?- could be the diaphram split. starting in this kind of weather requires the choke- whether it be manual or automatic.
garyv6100e Posted November 11, 2008 Author Report Posted November 11, 2008 The sound the carb makes has changed significantly from hearing a gentle (ish) induction noise to it being a lot louder and the engine is reluctant to pick up or tickover even when warmed up a bit although the carb was only set up properly apx 600 miles ago
zetecmk2 Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 1st time in a month!!! i think the car just feels "unloved"!! buy it triple dncf's!!!!
garyv6100e Posted November 11, 2008 Author Report Posted November 11, 2008 Cheeky bugger Glen , when we went to the dragon she started and ran perfectly on the way there but when i started her for the rod guys not sure if you heard how she was running managed to get home ok but been busy at work and visiting family since
vibrating_Cake Posted November 12, 2008 Report Posted November 12, 2008 two things ive had when my old carb on old engine did this... two solutions, one easier than the other 1. new spark plugs, if you havent used it in a while might be able to get it back by pulling the plugs out and with a bit of emmery paper giving them a good clean up. and maybe new ht leads if it hasnt had em in a while 2. if you live in england... its been 2degrees celcius.... carbs arent efi they dont alter to air temparature! try running the car with a very small amount of choke on, see if it runs any better. or ive just thought 3. block off the front grill with a piece of cardboard (so warm air gets trapped underneath the bonnet, and you should feel a difference in power, if its a better difference then number 2 is your problem if not it could be number 1
john_3.0s Posted November 12, 2008 Report Posted November 12, 2008 sounds like you have an inlet manifold leak, check your servo hose and carb gasket etc
garyv6100e Posted November 12, 2008 Author Report Posted November 12, 2008 thanks for the tips guys , i have been in the garage today and noticed the following , she fired up on the button and for the 1st minute or 2 no problems then starts to run a bit uneven and chucks out a bit of crap from the exhaust then if i leave it to tickover it stuggles and eventually stalls but whilst looking down the carb petrol is still coming through on to throttle butterflies for a little while then stops any idea's carb coming of tonight
Supercharged Nat Posted November 12, 2008 Report Posted November 12, 2008 crap out the exhaust?- black or blue? it sounds to me like the needle valve in the float chamber could be sticking open causing the carb to flood. it can happen, especially if theyve been stood a while.
garyv6100e Posted November 12, 2008 Author Report Posted November 12, 2008 black smoke and its leaving marks on the garage wall
Toby Posted November 12, 2008 Report Posted November 12, 2008 Pull the pipe off at the carb and turn it over - carefull not to spill any - just to ensure you have a good supply, the filter, pipe or other things could be creating starvation. The black shit could be soot and condensation.
Supercharged Nat Posted November 13, 2008 Report Posted November 13, 2008 its rich then. start by checking needle valve. also check the accelerator pump diaphram. if it looks worn, replace it.
garyv6100e Posted November 13, 2008 Author Report Posted November 13, 2008 Thanks for all the advice guys , not working this weekend (1st time in 6 weeks) so i shall sort out the problems then
