Retro-gone. Posted December 4, 2008 Report Posted December 4, 2008 sounds like the head gasket leaking
pauline Posted December 4, 2008 Author Report Posted December 4, 2008 sounds like the head gasket leaking how have tuqued all the head down has said in the book
SmokeEm Posted December 4, 2008 Report Posted December 4, 2008 sounds like the head gasket leaking how have tuqued all the head down has said in the book Did you check the head to see if it had warped or if there were any cracks etc? I think you should do a compression check 1st off.
pauline Posted December 4, 2008 Author Report Posted December 4, 2008 have put a new head on her which had been skimmed and was all fine just incase the other head had gone. dont have a compression test thing to do one
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted December 4, 2008 Report Posted December 4, 2008 Were both surfaces of head and block totally clean... i.e. no traces of old head gasket? What did it do when it broke down, was there a missfire? A compression check would be good, but it sounds like there is a leak between the oil and water ways and not a bore to oil or bore to water way. As it has been very cold recently, it could just be condensation that you're seeing in the oil, especially if the car hasn't been driven for a long distance (been running at operating temp for a while).
jay Posted December 4, 2008 Report Posted December 4, 2008 i know it sounds daft, but you changed the oil and filter? defo try get a compression tester, cheapy ones are about a tenner..
pauline Posted December 4, 2008 Author Report Posted December 4, 2008 ok she gets used a lot up till last tuesday when i thought the gasket went but cant see on the gasket were it went but i had forgoten to re tighten the head after i did the engine change. when she died last night i has slowwed down for coming up to traffic and she just cut out no misfire or nothing just stoped. had to use the jumppack to get her to start then would get so far and she would die again. had changed the oil did not do the filter but have a lot of water in with the oil now so know it is leaking some were. the new head had been skimed and was all clean and i cleaned the block off she has a coper gasket on her so did not make much mess
john_3.0s Posted December 4, 2008 Report Posted December 4, 2008 i know it sounds daft, but you changed the oil and filter? defo try get a compression tester, cheapy ones are about a tenner.. what he said^^^ could be some water in the oil still from when it went. how did it break down? what did the fella do to get it running again? sounds like a top bloke by the way!
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted December 4, 2008 Report Posted December 4, 2008 Ah, did you replace with a Copper Gasket??? If so, these can be a bit of a pain to stop weeping. You should follow your tightening sequence, and not forget to re-tourque the headbolts at the specified time. I know there can be issues with weeping copper gaskets on Anglia's, and it's said that you should re-torque at a slightly higher poundage that the specified setting. Also one last thing, did you smear both sides of the Copper Gasket with grease? This should help the gasket to seal

john_3.0s Posted December 4, 2008 Report Posted December 4, 2008 sounds like an electrical fault rather than head gasket then. get the battery charged and have another go, is the charging system working?
pauline Posted December 4, 2008 Author Report Posted December 4, 2008 sounds like an electrical fault rather than head gasket then. get the battery charged and have another go, is the charging system working? battery is now charged up but worried about the water in the oil plus the oil filler cap is very cloudey now worse then before i done the head gasket
john_3.0s Posted December 4, 2008 Report Posted December 4, 2008 have you replaced the oil since the head gasket first went? are you sure its not just water in the oil from before?

john_3.0s Posted December 4, 2008 Report Posted December 4, 2008 did you change the water when you did the head gasket?
Guest cortinamad-gonetoo Posted December 4, 2008 Report Posted December 4, 2008 i once put a head on a toyota corrola and it leaked water in to the oil there was some bungs on the head which were only finger tight amd it leaked through them also skiming the head is good but for about £35 you can get it pressure tessted then you know for definate if the head is ok also you need to be changing the oil filter too and clean out any engine breathers to test the water pressure feel the radiater hose when cold then again when hot you should feel a difference (i dont mean youll burn your fingers lol) also is the timing been set correctly (have you had the timing belt/chain off or camshaft out ???? if i think of any thing else ill reply again later
pauline Posted December 4, 2008 Author Report Posted December 4, 2008 did you change the water when you did the head gasket? yes changed and new anti frezze and water put in
john_3.0s Posted December 4, 2008 Report Posted December 4, 2008 sounds like its the headgasket then could be a crack in the head but unlikely. its prob an engine out job have the head pressure tested and get the block decked
