as you all know ive had a few overheating problems with my zodiac since i brought it back in the summer. its at a stage now that it seems fine weather yer pottering round town or out on the motor way. that is untill you get stuck in a jam then in about 20-30minutes it steadly goes up to the red :sad: then when you get moving again the temp comes straight down again! :? so i have decided to do away with the fixed fan and fit a 14in electric fan with controler from rat sport. in the instructions it says i need to take a feed from the ign switch. can i not go straight from the battery or is that a no no? im not great with electrics but need to learn! or does any one else think im masking a problem with the cooling system? any input i would be greatfull

If the temperature is only rising slowly and steadily after 30 mins in traffic, I reckon you don't have a problem with heating. Why not leave the fixed fan and fit a smaller electric fan on the front of the rad operated by switch inside the car. That way you can turn it on and off as you need to get cooling in traffic without major modifications to the original car?

Otherwise fit a bigger fan to the existing boss if there is space or one with more than 2 blades if you can get (or make) it?

Theres no problem going straight from the battery. I'm sure the kit will contain an inline fuse? The only problem with not feeding it from the ignition would be that the fan could start any time the coolant was hot enough wether the ignition is on or not. This could be a problem if you have a car alarm fitted.

Where is the coil located on your car? Can you not pick up a feed from the + side of the coil? (assumeing its neg earth)

Your new electric fan will be far more efficient than the original car fan could ever be, I recon that will be the end of your problems

the reason it goes to ignition is that it cuts off when you turn car off. if it went to the battery it would be on a permenant live and run on even when you switch the car off and if car hot and could drain battery
