Paul F Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 Hello! I've always planned to get my scort painted in 2 pack - but recently someone told me about there being 2 different types. Can anyone shed any light on this? Are there 2 types?! Is one better than the other? Much appreciated!
FredTransit Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 Would that be solvent based and water based? Or are they two different paints? Either way, it's getting harder to get hold of any solvent based paint these days.
deluxemk1 Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 They probably mean solid colour which shines straight from the gun like cellulose would or base and clear which uses a coloured undercoat then a clear two pack laquer. Basecoat will do normal colours like signal yellow or rosso red etc as well not just metallics. However with waterbase being the norm use a solid colour two pack if your car is not metallic. Oh ans d ask for a high solid product you can do it in two coats then not three as the paint covers quicker!
GT_lenny Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 there's water or solvent based- water based is the newer of the two since body repair shops are not supposed to used solvent based paint anymore, the water based stuff is fine if your in a proper booth and your set up for it, the "old" solvent based stuff is better in my opinion and is still readily availible but mostly from smaller suppliers Otherwise you could of meant solid colour or clear over base solid colour is dead simple straight out the gun let it dry and buff it clear over base - is the sytem for metallics although can be used for non metallics too(gives a nice gloss) you basically first apply a matt/satin base coat which has no activator in as it starts to get "touch dry" you apply a couple of coats of clear laquer which contains the activator for the base coat and when buffed gives your gloss think thats pretty acurate must say i'm not a paniter though this is my understanding of it all
Paul F Posted January 2, 2009 Author Report Posted January 2, 2009 Thanks for the responses guys! It was solid based paint this person was talking about... really helped thanks a lot!
