72mk1escort Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 My Dad had a mexico which was a 1974 and it had a 1601cc engine he remembers being told that ford had to do this so they could qualify for the rallys. He friend used to have an earlier mexico and that had a 1598cc engine I know one is 3cc more but did they have to be over 1600cc or something so they could rally them as they had to produce road going versions. Another thing i wouldnt mind knowing is are the two engines the same spec (Horse Power, Torque etc) and does anyone know how they gained the extra 3cc?
emu Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 They were all 1598 werent they? I understood it that ford said they were 1601 for Homologation reasons??
V8ian Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Never heard of 1601, but its probably not hard to acheive, if you check the maching tollerences, and take the bore size to the max on the first bore, and take into account the +/- on the throw of the crank, 3cc is an easy thing too obtain
MexDan Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Yeah its to do with homologation, so that the x/flow block could be used when cosworth built the bda head.. the 1601 is the reported machining tolerance figure as far as i know...
livewire7116 Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Rumour was it was juggle with the figures as they were winning everything in thier class at time so by saying it was a 1601 meant they moved upto the more competative class

By claiming that the engine was 1601cc it put it into the larger capacity class and so it could be enlarged as far as possible and tuned accordingly Because the model was raced in production classes it would require a certain number of road cars to be produced to prove its production status, hence the 1601cc thingy
