prefectopop Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 Me and Si have been car buying. Well car swapping actually and it means that Si is the proud owner of a 1953 Mk1 Consul. It was taken off the road in 1968 by its original owner and stored in his garage until this year when its been brought back to life. It's in a word "timewarp". Its never been welded, is totally solid apart from a little bit of rust on the rear wheelarch and one front wing. Even in the dash was copies of the AA handbook 1954 and 1963, a copy of Road Craft from 1955 and an owners manual with the original dealers label. But it hasn't been without birthing pains - once acquired it got down the road to the petrol station with major burning clutch smell. After this the gear selector decided not to select any gears. Finally got it into 3rd and limped it home. As it got to the final stright the brake master cylinder spat its dummy (very hairy moment) and finally rolled to a stop. So after a day of fitting a new brake cylinder and bleeding the brakes, we were ready to take it to its storage location, 20 miles down the road (yes it does have an MoT). We got as far as the very fast bypass down the road when the old girl coughed and spluttered and ground to a halt. So off came the air filter to find the choke linkage wide open, a bit more fuel and a bit of jiggerypokery and off we went again. It got home and finally conked out at the entrance to the drive. We rolled it into the drive and thanked our lucky stars we were back in one piece. So the plan is: replace all service items and probably anything rubber or was once rubber, tidy up the bodywork and give it a fresh coat of paint, then off we go for the summer - another car to add to the collection. This has to be the last one now...
Pipster007 Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 The important question is.........................Will it be at Ashford on Saturday and if not, why not...................................You have two and a bit days to fix it Lovely motor btw
prefectopop Posted December 6, 2006 Author Report Posted December 6, 2006 The reply to ashford on saturday is unfortunately no - we really hoped it wasn't going to spit its dummy quite as spectacularly as it has done, but I'm suffering with a nice viral stomach bug and si is off to Egypt tomorrow so a full service and replacement clutch is a little bit too much for us in 2 days. Oh and my 100E Pop is being topcoated by us on saturday and sunday. If its any consolation as long as the weathers good we'll bring down the Prefect and me mum and Stepdad are coming in their Mk2 Zephyr. So we'll still keep up our '50s ford theme
prefectopop Posted December 6, 2006 Author Report Posted December 6, 2006 Cheers it is such a clean car can't believe it! when its ligt I'll take some more pics of it. Worth sacrificing the everyday runaround for eh? anyway who needs a modern car lol.
bomber1 Posted December 7, 2006 Report Posted December 7, 2006 oh my what a collection of cars good work hope its done soon
prefectopop Posted December 7, 2006 Author Report Posted December 7, 2006 Cheers everyone for all the nice comments. This one is gonna be a project for early next year, as I said it hardly needs any work at all before we give it a respray (probably gonna respray it in cellulose), and then we've gotta work through the engine and give it a good service and tune up. That way it should go more than 2 miles without breaking down!
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted December 8, 2006 Report Posted December 8, 2006 That is a lovley car. I had the same sort of result with my Anglia. I also had similar probs that you are having now. They need to be driven, they hate sitting around. Get some more pic's up
Daggle Posted December 8, 2006 Report Posted December 8, 2006 Don't sack him Jeff, but Wayne couldn't help himself, he had to pop round this afternoon and show me the piccies on his phone of the new purchase, jeez I didn't realise it was so clean, it looks wicked Get some pics up of the Zephyr as well, maybe we should all meet up with all the cars at the yard and get some pics of them all together Hope you get better soon, hope to see you at Ashford mate , getting quite a collection amongst us now
prefectopop Posted December 8, 2006 Author Report Posted December 8, 2006 Oh I see - he didn't tell me that! Rumbled lol. Yeah I've got a cd with the zeph pics on will see if I can find it. My stepdad is into photography now as well as old skool fords and I've asked him he he can do some photos in cepia (old style browny coloured photos) for us of the cars. Only thing is we've all got to dress up to look the part - lots of sideburns and sheepskin flying jackets methinks! Thanks for the well wishing I am feeling a lot better today and can't wait for Ashford tomorrow night - gonna be knackered as we're painting the Pop all day tomorrow! MMR has got a good old collection now: 2 x Mk1 Cortinas 1 x 100E Pop 1 x 107E Pop 1 x Mk1 Consul 1 x Mk2 Zephyr 1 x 105E Anglia And of course the Drag Car And all the cars are pre 66 - how cool is that! There's not even enough of us to drive all the cars together lol - although I'm sure there are plenty of volunteers desperate for a go lol. Back to the consul hopefully next week we'll be able to get started on ordering up some of the parts and working out what we need to get the old girl going again. Haven't even dared try and start her up again since she died on the drive on Wednesday evening!
oldskool4me Posted January 9, 2007 Report Posted January 9, 2007 quite a collection you have there, consul looks mint top find:D
