i'm guessing this is something that at least a few people on here have thought about.

my escort currently has no sound system at all

i have purchased a universal centre console thingy which has space for a modern car stereo so i'll have somewhere to put it when i get it but my problem is that i haven't really seen any current stereos that will look the part in the car.

i'm not super fussed about seriously loud sounds with the speakers - probably going to fit some 6x9's in the side panels in the back and some smaller speakers in the front footwells and ideally i'd like a stereo that has an extra output for a sub (can't be arsed with a seperate amp really) which i will hopefully be able to mount under the back shelf in the boot (there's a hole there already)

i have the speakers all lying around from previous cars but i'm kind of stumped when it comes to the head unit.

I'd like to get one that has an aux in and maybe a usb, certainly one that plays mp3 from cd at least.

i'd really like to fit one of those hidden / internal aerials too

don't want to fit a 70s stereo

any recommendations / advice?

How deep are your pockets?

Becker Mexico?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Becker-MEXICO-794 ... 240%3A1318

Alternatively there was a pioneer head unit that looked quite old skool a couple of years ago, they've stopped making them now but you might pick one up second hand

It was the DEH P77MP and had quite retro styling, it wasn't as period as the Becker but does have the twin knobs associated with older radios.

I couldn't find one so I hooked up a new old stock original FM cassette Capri one to an FM modulator and CD changer and amps!

Wouldn't mind swapping to a single unit now though...

ive got one of them universal thingys, ive got a kenwood single disc head unit in mine, not ideal but it look ok, i think as long as its fitted well then it looks ok, if not hide it somewhere ie glove box or something!!

the door already had speakers cut into them so i bought some custom fit alpines and put the old stylee grills over the top of them

ive also got one of those aerials that stick to the top of the windscreen coz i didnt want to drill a hole in the wing, and it is useless to be quite honest

not the best pic but you get the idea :D

that looks the business!

exactly the kind of thing

(although i can't quite work out if it plays cd's amongst the myriad other things it does)

my pockets are nowhere near that deep though, thinking more like £200 max

so they don't work too good then?

tbh i don't listen to the radio too much so it's not critical - i'd rather it looked good than functioned properly :)

where would one purchase such an aerial though - halfords don't seem to have them

all i can say is my ones rubbish, can just about pick up the local cheesy FM

think i got it from the now defunct motorists centre, halfords or e bay prob your best bet, there might be better ones out there mate, but to be honest i just usually put a cd on if i get bored of the exhaust note, which isnt very often :ykt::mrgreen:

oldskool in dash not wired up... new skool in glovebox!

we have a nice one in hof which dont look out of place at all as its just black

That Becker Mexico is cheap on Ebay, i paid more than that trade when i fitted one recently.

Even though it's expensive it did look good in a 69 Mustang, plays Ipod and has a Sd slot and Bluetooth phone input, but no Cd's.

Vdo did some retro looking head units for a while, i think i'd just use a Jvc , Kenwood or Alpine unit if your into ipod as they seem to have the best direct input.

As for the Sub i fit the Kenwood Amplified Sub which works and sounds really good.
