jimbo Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 Due to a combination of weather and lack of servicing on my part, the car has had some trouble the last few weeks starting. Yesterday was a no-go....and my missus was not best pleased at being late for school So I'm thinking of getting one of those battery boosters that she can use when I'm not there to tinker. Has anyone got a suggestion of a good one to buy? Any yes, yes. I know!! I'll be out there on Saturday giving it the TLC it deserves.... Cheers, Jim
sitting_budda Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 what about a solar panel on the rear parcel shelf to trickle charge the battery? never personally used them, but in theory it should stop the battery going flat.... http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=223251 http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=217850
pauline Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 i have a booster pack very use full always got it in my boot just incase
cisco24uk Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 Halfauds did an AA approved one with a built in emergency light and compressor. Was about 30 quid.
Pipster007 Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 Perhaps a new battery would be better
vibrating_Cake Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 instead of spending time and money on other ways to charge your battery.... why not buy a new battery and alternator???
Yeomans22 Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 my capri i have just bought had a battery with 340amps, i have just tonight fitted one with 540amps and the difference is very noticable
jimbo Posted February 11, 2009 Author Report Posted February 11, 2009 Cheers folks! All useful suggestions......Battery and alternator outputs were checked last month. All tickety-boo!! Issue I had was that car wouldn't start and missus killed the juice trying to get it going. I needed either to recharge battery, or try a jump starter (normal jump start not an option - long story). Anyhow bought one on offer at Maplins (£40) charge it. Gave the motor a few turns and still nothing. It's late cold and dark, so tinkering will have to wait 'til tomorrow, but my guess is damp ignition/timing combo. However, les say someting has happened to the alternator and it's not doing its job anymore.......I've got a query, should I be able to still start the car. Or is its continued running dependant on whatever juice is in teh battery?

Or is its continued running dependant on whatever juice is in teh battery? battery provides the spark for the ignition, go figure? race cars run alternator-less for day races without lights no problems, but once the battery is out of juice the car will stop (no spark) sounds like it needs to be wrapped up warm, buy it a blanket
bortaf Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 Cure the problem with it not sparking and starting mate, it's THE only way, people moan about olduns not starting but my cortina has started every morning even under a foot of snow, cos i look after it , battery jacket greased and cleaned connection ect ect Cure the problem not the sympton
jimbo Posted February 12, 2009 Author Report Posted February 12, 2009 You're right there bortaf. That's what I've been skimping on the last month or two. Think I got complacent cos I'd fitted a bestek kit.... Anyhow, gave it the love it deserved. Cleaned the plugs, leads, dizzy, earth contacts, checked terminals......All good now. Turned it over....Still with the booster. Definitely getting sparks to plugs (checked with timing lamp ) but just not picking up....Sounds like it wants to on occasion, but still no joy. Definitelty got fuel as well. Just doesn;t seem to sustain. Neighbour gets home soon, gonna try a proper jump start. See where that gets me......Looking more like a battery/alternator issue though
V8ian Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 take off cap, spray with WD40, inside and out, take leads off one at a time, clean and spray again with wd40, then spray all ignition with it as well, take off air filter, and there should be a flap over the top of the carb, hold this open with a spanner thats large enough not to drop into the carb, now sit in car, push throttle down to the floor, and keep it there, now try starting it----- Im guessing you have flooded it,
omj624p Posted February 13, 2009 Report Posted February 13, 2009 ....and my missus was not best pleased at being late for school Lucky bugger And you're 31!!!
