danny69 Posted February 13, 2009 Report Posted February 13, 2009 How much do you think a bodyshop would charge me to paint a petrol flap? I have rubbed it down cleaned and primed it, it just needs the top coat. I have the exact paint but as it is a 2K acrylic I can`t spray it myself. I would just get an aerosol made up but although I have the paint I can`t get it matched as it is just called ready mixed Jet Black, and apparently one jet black is different to another. The only reason I am having to redo it (incase your wondering) is that the people that painted my car decided that tetrasyl textured underseal would be the best thing to pain the inside of the petrol flap with. (not a great idea when you consider you can use petrol to remove underseal.) So I removed the flap, cleaned it up but the fact it also had a dent in and I managed to chip the paint on the edge no means I want it painted.
dawesy1700 Posted February 13, 2009 Report Posted February 13, 2009 i'd be suprised if they wanted more than £20, i had my old rover wing mirrors painted and they were only £25.
Retro-gone. Posted February 13, 2009 Report Posted February 13, 2009 buy a small air brush gun , the one that takes air cannisters and put the paint in there,(dont forget to add hardner) youve also got the gun for any future small touch ups
MG-Ford Posted February 13, 2009 Report Posted February 13, 2009 If you have the exact paint, take it to a supplier they will match it for you. Our local one will put the paint you have into a can for ya.
danny69 Posted February 13, 2009 Author Report Posted February 13, 2009 Thanks for the replies. I am tempted to go with Tony`s suggestion, makes sense really. Might be useful in the future if ever I need to touch up. Do`n know much about that though so I will look into whats available. MG Ford, I can`t get it put in an aerosol as it would need the hardener added and that would set in the can. My local paint supplier (Brown Bros) weren`t able / interested in matching the paint from the tin.
Retro-gone. Posted February 13, 2009 Report Posted February 13, 2009 halfords wii match it in a can , it will be acrylic but that doesnt matter .
danny69 Posted February 13, 2009 Author Report Posted February 13, 2009 My Halfords said they could only match it if I knew what car it was from. I said it is just a generic Jet black ready mixed paint and I showed them the tin. They just shrugged and said they couldn`t help.

If you have 2K aerosol made up they dont go off/hard, and it has hardener added (have to make sure you clean the nozel though). Had this done hundreds of times with old paint for the BMC barges, I always keep leftover paint for this reason. I think you may need to try another paint supplier, because matching up paints and mixing them is supposed to be their "bread and butter" work, and having the original paint to hand makes their life so much eaiser. Defo sounds like you had a lazy guy on the counter bud. EDIT******* Just called my local paint supplier just to make sure I was not talking out my ass, and yeah 2k/Water based/Celly can all be made into aerosol. 2K of course is the main one I know of/use which requires hardner.

Fiesta Steve Posted February 13, 2009 Report Posted February 13, 2009 If you send it to me I'll do it for free
Pipster007 Posted February 13, 2009 Report Posted February 13, 2009 You're a jolly nice fellow, Steve
danny69 Posted February 13, 2009 Author Report Posted February 13, 2009 Thanks for the ideas and kind offers. I`ll bear them in mind, Cheers Steve. The paint I have is indeed 2 pack so needs a hardener mixed with it. Are you saying I could get it put in an aerosol with a hardener andit would keep? I thought you had to use it within a few hours of mixing?
Fiesta Steve Posted February 13, 2009 Report Posted February 13, 2009 No problem m8, for the price of the postage to and fro you maybe able to find someone local to you to do it but its just another option for you if your stuck. No point paying lots for something that will take 5 minutes
dawesy1700 Posted February 14, 2009 Report Posted February 14, 2009 where can you get those air cartridge airbrush guns from? sound perfect for me
FredTransit Posted February 14, 2009 Report Posted February 14, 2009 Have you got a hobby shop nearby? Here's one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Badger-Airbrush-M ... efid=store
prefectopop Posted February 15, 2009 Report Posted February 15, 2009 We charged Dean (Noddles) 20 quid to paint his cap so there's no need it to cost any more than that.
