Savvi Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 Got some friends who like the look of these and are looking to buy one later in the year. Has anyone owned, been in one, know of one for sale cheap !! are they any good ? She does dog trials and often has to travel each day over a weekend or find some where to stay, so looking for the camper conversion type if possible, although willing to pay to have converted herself as some people do that for around £1500, if she can get a car at the right money. Please discuss !!!!
Copey Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 bloke in our club has a bongo, seems to be pretty good lots of space, never let him down, good for cartin stuff to shows n seem well built enough!
Savvi Posted May 7, 2009 Author Report Posted May 7, 2009 Thanks i'm not sure what engine is in them, but they seem popular.
Admin Vista Posted May 7, 2009 Admin Report Posted May 7, 2009 A friend of mine uses one for weekend trips away surfing, he's quite complimentary about it but stresses that it's only really good for a weekend break and even then you need to be ok with roughing it a little.
Savvi Posted May 7, 2009 Author Report Posted May 7, 2009 Does he have the camper conversion ? The ones they have looked at have proper sink, cooker rock n roll bed etc. Like this one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAZDA-BONGO-CAMPE ... 7C294%3A50
accord83 Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 I had one for 2yrs, a 2.5 tdi engine 130bhp auto gearbox. Some 2.5v6 and 2.0 petrol. Manuals rare. Can be bought with a fixed or electric elevating roof. Never slept in mine, which had the power tent roof, my son and his mates toured Scotland in it. They said it would have been better if they had used the side or rear driveaway awning tents, as 3 in a Bongo was a bit cramped, but they were free camping at a different place each night. Diesel engine similiar to Ford Ranger, but not exactly the same. All cooling system needs to be checked and pipes replaced, radiators flushed and bled properly, because if you overheat one the cyl. head's toast. Pull like a train, very comforteble, some come with powered everything, but no two seem to have the same options. Most 4wd, mine was 2wd (some 2wd have a lsd). I sold mine to a family friend who tows his racecar. Can be a bit thirsty 24-28mpg, but great vehicles. Check out; http://www.bongofury.co.uk/ I miss mine, it was a helluva versatile bit of kit and never missed a beat. And if you need the blue oval, the Ford Freda is the same vehicle. The Mazda is called a Bongo Friendee Freetop2. They love their crazy names the Japanese.
