can someone tell me what the legal noise level is for a road legal exhaust and at how many revs and also how far from the end of the exhaust have i got to measure from as i ave now got a decible meter and want to find out how loud i am and if its legal

there is no ligal limit so as loud as you like the police can ownly do you if you rev the whatsits out of the engine in your local mcdonalds car park and some one complanes they could do you for public nuisance or similar

i believe for reference its 10cm away at a 45 degree angle at 4000rpm... thats for road rallies, on unclosed roads.. not 100% on distance away but the rest is correct :)

NEW mot rules apparently say if the exhaust is noticeably louder than standard its a fail....

nobody listens to that though, other than that the legal limit is which the policeman seems to be causing a nusance e.g. in estates at night

It's down the tester if i thought it was to noisy i would fail it, i have only ever failed one car for it and that was a saxo  but it was bad.

Ok boys and girls this is a quote from 'Daggle' our resident traffic cop, hopefully he won't mind me quoting him

Well its taken a bit of searching but here goes once again from the good book

The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 regulate the construction, weight and equipment of motor vehicles. Regulation 55 provides for the control of noise made by certain vehicles with three or more wheels. It states:

55(1) This regulation applies to every wheeled motor vehicle having at least three wheels and first used on or after 1st October 1983

So for most of us OSF'ers then the regulations don't apply to motor vehicles made before Oct 1983, however for the capri and fiesta boys then the noise limit must be below 80 decibels, this however can only be tested with a prescribed device

My tester said that and said - I'll let that go as I have no idea how noisey these were 40 years ago - I wasn't even born! :thumbsup:8)

When the escRot got VOR'd by VOSA back in december, the young lad that was left to inspect the car was insistant that the exhaust would not pass and MOT, much, much too loud apparently.

As I said to him at the time, if you can find me a totally standard mk1 escort, running a NOS exhaust then I will concede and change it.

Needless to say, the exhaust stayed, it passed an MOT and has since been changed for something a little quieter for my sanity

er mines at 111db@4000rpm

 Quite loud

Isn't every 3db's twice as loud? That would make you about 6 times over the limit! :lol:8)

I borrowed a noise meter thinking I would run an open header at Brighton speed trials (noise limit 113) and it went off the 130db scale!! I thought it was a bit noisey!
