just watched a documentry on bbc1 that has really made me think about how fookin lucky we are , i thought that as we are like a family on osf with a bit of backing from a big company .. bbc .. etc we could oganise an event that would raise money for homeless i would just like to put something back into the world and try and make someone elses life better , although people have problems and there are a few homeless organisations around very few are helped that need it .

idea's feedback would be kushti

My brother in law ended up homeless after he split up from his bird, he was crashing on our settee for a few days while he got a place, or so we thought, the local council (although they call themselves a housing association now) didn't want to know and I ended up having to give him a deposit to see him through...

At the same time a Russian doris who works with the wife has just been given a flat, she said that they get their families to write a letter saying they are kicking them out because their overcrowded and the council give them another flat, then they will do the same for more relatives, shame the bloke who's paid tax all his working life cant get the same treatment.

Another rant is that while he was looking for places he was told at least 4 times by different landlords that the rent they had advertised the places at had increased as they had had single parents interested and the local council would pay better than him, looks like everyones milking the system then :(

Obviously a subject close to peoples hearts.

Me? I give to charities but never to beggars. Why? Well because there are far too many people who do it "professionally" when they could in fact get off their backside and work. The influx of immigrants getting jobs proves there is work to be done.

Equally, whilst I sympathise with the plight of the homeless and certainly wouldn't want to be homeless myself. There is also a part of me that thinks that the more the general public give to their cause the less pressure there is on the government / local authorities to put their hands in their pockets and do something about it.

Why do they need to find another deposit when the landlord will be returning theirs?

Personally if I were them, if they're under notice I think I'd not be paying the rent.

When Baz105e and ikletash were looking for a place, Tash was pregnant and homeless because her Mum gave up her Council tenancy, and we kicked Baz out, and gave him a letter telling him he had 4 weeks to find somewhere else.

The council wanted to send someone round to see if our house was big enough for all of us, they were told in no uncertain terms that its my house not theirs, and I say who lives here, not the Council.

They had a council house within 4 weeks and 3 days ;) all lefit, above board and no telling of lies to get it either.

Providing the notice is in accordance with the terms of the lease then landlords have a right to give notice to anyone they wish for whatever reason they wish. Why should they / you refuse to pay the rent? They're still living in someone elses house aren't they? Deposits are returned when the tenants move out and only if the property has been looked after rather than trashed. My last tenant disappeared owing me a months rent, stealing some of my property and leaving my house needing redecorated from top to bottom, the one months rent deposit covered the month he owed me but didn't touch the sides in repairing the house. Never again, I'd rather my house was empty than rented out.

I think the key lies in eduction and training.

If we could provided them with a skill and a fresh set of rags to wear they could get a job and earn their way through life just like most other people.

I got no skills and no qualifications and im a binman,im not even that clever but i still have a nice house nice cars nice things and great kids going to really good school.

A good life is out there if you earn it because the world owes you fook all

I agree with you there, and your earlier comment about beggars. The problem with beggars is you don't know if they are professional or not, so I don't give to them. I work for my money and always have done, why should I just give it away? I do buy the big issue though, cos I feel the vendors are doing something to change their circumstances.

As for tenants, been there done that. It got to the stage that we had accepted the bedsits would have to be hosed down when they left
