My Capri is acting suspiciously, and some help confirming my suspicions would be appreciated.

Since I've had it it been making a noise. When idling with the car in neutral, there is a slight rumble coming from the transmission. If I depress the clutch the rumble stops.

More recently, I've found that putting the car in 1st or second is getting quite tricky and it takes a little bit of convincing.

Googling suggests that it's the selector fork that's going. What are your thoughts please?

If the rumbling stops when you press the clutch then it`s not the release bearing , more than likely the 1st motion shaft bearing .

Would that explain why it's "crunchy" when I try to put it in to 1st and 2nd?

I'm inclined to agree it's thrust release bearing or fork related which means the clutch isn't actuating correctly.

Unless the beering is really bad then no it wouldnt cause the gear selection probs , sounds more like the 1st to 2nd syncro hud is worn . Just out of interest what gearbox is it , 4 or 5 speed ? and wot oil are you running in it ?

But would it rattle and be hard to shift if the clutch was really badly out of adjustment - maybe :?

I know lots of 1st to 2nd syncros get damaged by "racing" gear changes so you may be right - or maybe there are two things not right.

It's a Type 9.....Oil? Nothing special I assume.

The gearbox came from a 2.0 laser, before being transplanted into a Mk1. I think that it has done around 70k.

The previous owner put a new (heavy duty) clutch on about 12k ago. If Toby means adjustment in terms of cable (??) the bite point is quite a way up the travel pedal, so I don;t think it's that, or do you mean another adjustment?

or maybe there are two things not right. yes def could be lots of different faults . If its a 5 speed box , we always used to run them on atf to give a smoother change so maybe just a fluid change may help .

try adjusting the clutch cable as if its slack you wont get a smooth change as there wont be any take up on the arm

Hi Jason. There's no slack in there mate. All nice and snug

1st off check the oil ! type 9 are very very finiky about oil level so it's allways the first point of call on them, it will also give trouble changing gears 1st and 2nd being the worst 9/10 times ;)

Only use the special semi synthetic oil made specificly for the Type9 do NOT use EP 80 or 90 !!! you'll never get a smooth change, personly i would never use ATF either, IMHO the type 9 doesn't have the finer tolerences of say the MT75 and oil that thin ruins the box (most gearbox specialists say the same) i've been fitting and servicing type 9s since they came out (as a cab office mechanic in the early 80s ) so i saw the results over high millages in a short time.

If it gets louder when you press the pedal it's the release bearing (when you press the pedal you put presure on the release bearing and that extra pressure makes it noisy) if it get quieter it's the bearing in the box ( pressing the pedal takes pressure off the shaft bearing and the shaft get supported by the release bearing, less pressure less noise)

Very well explained about the noise Bortaf, i know what i meen but cant expalian very well sometimes (lack of education). We found running atf in the 5 speed boxes cured alot of 5th gear problems due to better lube , but the proper semi synthetic oil would be the right choice for definate .

That's sounds about right!

So....Box out job, I guess. Thankfully have a spare T9 lying around, so might give that a go.

Thanks for all your help folks!!
