zetecmk2 Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 hmmmm, strange. i'm the quality controller in a bodyshop. a couple of weeks ago, we repaired the door on a merc, the doorcard was on back order, 3 weeks and out of our control! the owner threatened to sue? us as we couldn't supply parts for his car!! (problem customer straight away)! anyway, i was given the car to check when the doorcard was fitted, and told, the owner was a possible problem, and was really fussy about cleanliness.....oh and would be here in 30 mins to pick it up!! if i had time to find faults....i couldn't sort them anyway!! he had the passenger seat re-trimmed, which was on the jobcard (which i work from) but........ the fitter never fitted the bolt that holds the seatbelt stalk to the seat base!! we don't do a lot of seat changes so it's not a routine check. i checked the seat was bolted down. but didn't check the stalk (no reason why i should, as it wasn't mentioned on the job card)!! anyway, his mrs pulled the stalk and it ripped out the seat base gross misconduct!!!
RossMK2 Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 not your fault at all if it wasn't on jobcard
Dom Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 Hmmmm, thats a bugger. Lots of Merc owners are twats, I know, I was one. (a merc owner that is) Well obviously you'll argue the case, but if all else fails, read and re-read your contract and job description and if it allows, be a right Jobsworth!
marky4 Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 that's not good mate get some legal advice
zetecmk2 Posted September 16, 2009 Author Report Posted September 16, 2009 not your fault at all if it wasn't on jobcard that's my arguement! on the quality check sheet, theres a section for seatbelts and i've ticked non applicable. if i'd ticked ok, and the stalk pulled out, i'd be in the wrong. but i signed the car off as roadworthy!! i also didn't check the wheelnuts as not on jobcard!!! (we didn't touch the wheels, but if one came off, seems it'd be my fault) hmmm..SCAPEGOAT springs to mind!!
Admin Vista Posted September 16, 2009 Admin Report Posted September 16, 2009 I think you'd stand a good chance of winning a claim for unfair dismissal if you fought that one.

(we didn't touch the wheels, but if one came off, seems it'd be my fault) hmmm..SCAPEGOAT springs to mind!! Surely you're only signing off the items on the jobcard as roadworthy. Otherwise if I went to you to touch up a scratch on my bootlid for example, you'd be required to check the seatbelts/tyres/windscreen/wheel nuts/brakes/etc etc etc before you gave the car back to me And you're hardly gonna do that for free, and I would be p!ssed as if you wanted to charge me for it, when I never asked you to look at anything other than the bootlid Makes no logical sense at all mate. You're fine Now have a
Andrade Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 True, i hope you sort it out.. I had the beginning of this year spent looking for a decent job as i wanted to change and not a plesant experience.
caprinerd Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 had a chat to a mate who deals with this sort of thing and he maintains that you would win a case of unfair dismissal if it aint on job card its down to the fitter not quality control
SmokeEm Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 That a right shit mate Let's hope justice prevails
lotusless Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 sorry to hear that m8! hope you get it sorted
bigglesmk2 Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 Mate i do agree its dosent sound like your fault but if it was my car and i got it back only to find the seatbelt dangerous (imagine if it didnt come loose there and then but in an accident ). I'd be pretty pissed and would want to see heads roll. More like the person who fitted the seat back in should get the blame , but as you stated you signed it fit for the road. Sorry to say but it dont look good
Durham Fiesta Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 if its not on your job card then surely it can't be your fault?
mk1estate Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 Wot an real load of old b>llocks, The fitter who took the seat belt off is responsible to put it back, if your not required to check it then its not down to you. On the other hand if your employer is taking that atitude with you ..i would look elsewhere anyway. I dont think you have any need to feel responsible so hold your head up high mate
zetecmk2 Posted September 16, 2009 Author Report Posted September 16, 2009 but i want to stay there until i finish my gt!!!! no workshop=unhappy glen
james1700 Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 glen i feel for you mate, i work in a bodyshop as a senior ATA qualified MET technition and as such have to to sign off all the strip and fit work that comes out of the body shop. however as well as that i am supposed to do my own job and am expected to be around 150% efficient too. in effect im signing off work i cannot be expected to see. to those here simply blaming the fitter picture the scene, your given a jobcard with unrealistic times, this sort of job is quite rare so is not automatic as such and yes whilst being pushed to do the job quicker than it should take something gets over looked. this is not all the fitters fault, i maintain if insurers keep screwing times down on us someone will die due to technitians being rushed into being efficient enough. im sorry but the qc is the last in line to ensure the car is roadworthy or not. even if stated on our job cards or not everything still has to be checked. i have said to coworkers before all out BSI accreditation just makes the companys we work for less liable, its ultimatly down to the qc and technitians, its a shit industry we work in
over_head_cam Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 Deffo sounds like a case of c**tyness. We don't want an unhappy Glen BTW, my exhaust is blowing, and it's your fault for not checking it
zetecmk2 Posted September 16, 2009 Author Report Posted September 16, 2009 james...thats it!! and in a bonus bodyshop, corners will be cut to satisfy greed. times are getting worse! but people need the hours. phil, i'm sorry sir, that must be our fault.....even though it's on the checking in sheet and signed by you!! but as all our superiors are spineless jellyfish and won't argue with you, we'll renew the whole system, valet your car and waive your excess!! making a£1000 loss on the job!!
Admin Vista Posted September 17, 2009 Admin Report Posted September 17, 2009 phil, i'm sorry sir, that must be our fault.....even though it's on the checking in sheet and signed by you!! but as all our superiors are spineless jellyfish and won't argue with you, we'll renew the whole system, valet your car and waive your excess!! making a£1000 loss on the job!! kinell, where do you work? I'm bringing my car to your place
james1700 Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 vista it happens in all bodyshops, the amount of unrelated jobs i have to do is immense, and most of them i am expected to do without getting paid for couple of weeks ago i had to change a rocker cover gasket on a focus becuase there was 3 miles added to the vehicles odometer due to the technitian taking the car on road test to check for wind noise the owner kicked off saying we had caused an oil leak i can understand from the customers point of view, everyone is out to get all they can but when i get asked to do the job without a jobcard it means i dont get paid, it also means my efficiencies go down which means im under more pressure the next job i do to be even quicker than humanly possible just to make up at the end of the day the rich get richer the poor get poorer, i havnt had a pay rise in 3 years, the cost of living has risen dramatically in that time but the bosses are still rolling round in range rover sports and bmw's King makes me sick
zetecmk2 Posted September 17, 2009 Author Report Posted September 17, 2009 good luck for tomorrow bud cheers

D-FENS Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 Glenn i know all to well times are hard ,but cant you and some decent workmates try to set up on your own and offer a sensible service i am sure word will get round and you could build up a good network of people .
