Stu_B Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 I spent all weekend blasting about in my Anglia on a camping trip with mates. It was brilliant charging up steep hills (400m up in less than 2 miles up onto Exmoor! Gradients of up to 1 in 4 and hairpin bends ) around Porlock, Lynton & Lymnouth in Somerset/Devon. Got home without a hitch, washed the car & took it for a spin... stopped running a few hundred metres down the road Fuel pump sounds odd (Electric one mounted by the fuel tank), almost rattling compared to it's normal steady tick. It idles ok but dies when you rev it up... any ideas what to check/ look for?
bigdaz27 Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 i had some thing like this the other week and it was the float in the carb so might be worth having a look there first
Stu_B Posted September 28, 2009 Author Report Posted September 28, 2009 I will check the carbs (twin 40's) but I'm pretty sure it's the pump as after I pushed it to the edge of the road it stopped rattling, started ticking & I was able to drive the car home. It's now rattling again so I don't want to risk driving it.
mk1super Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 Mine didnt rattle or nowt just stopped working lol
Toby Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 Ask a silly question - you got enough fuel in it? They're noisey when you run out.
Stu_B Posted September 28, 2009 Author Report Posted September 28, 2009 yeah got over quarter of a tank... according to the guage better check!
Stu_B Posted September 28, 2009 Author Report Posted September 28, 2009 Solved! Knackered fuel pump... er no. Knackered fuel guage

Knackered fuel guage Wait 'till Toby reads this Nice one for finding the problem though No such thing as a silly question. Except that one! Glad it's fixed - we've all done it - old guages, set the trap for you to fall in to!
Stu_B Posted September 29, 2009 Author Report Posted September 29, 2009 Well after it conked out I parked it up & went out for the rest of the day. I hadn't looked at it so I thought I'd pop the question on here while I was at work so I had an idea what to look for when I got home I'll have a better look before I ask for help next time
H.P.E harry Posted September 29, 2009 Report Posted September 29, 2009 Was going to post something up like this unitl i read your post! My girlfriends pop keeps playing up too, basically we drove it all the way back from essex the other night (around eighty miles) fine without no problems, pull into my drive turn it off for a couple of minutes then start it go to drive off and it cuts out. So we tucked it in for the night and left it till the next day. The next morning starts up fine and drives for about 10 miles and cuts out, we left it for ten minutes and tried it again and it fired up and drove home no problem. This happens every time we take it out and im thinking its the manual fuel pump. Anyone had this problem on the old side valve engines?
Stu_B Posted September 29, 2009 Author Report Posted September 29, 2009 I had a problem similar to that on my old 1200 estate. I fitted an inline fuel filter just outside the tank outlet & it cured it. It was basically crap in the tank blocking the fuel lines, you might wanna remove the tank & clean it out

Stu_B Posted September 29, 2009 Author Report Posted September 29, 2009 Filter like that & a good wash out of the tank should sort it. I also blew all my fuel lines through with an air hose
Andrade Posted September 29, 2009 Report Posted September 29, 2009 I had the same problem with the king filter on my viva! I changed half of the car, literally! fuel pump, fuel line, carburettor, coil, put a points distributor for testing (cos its with a lumenition) and still did it - then it turned out to be a 5€ filter...........
