stevepeanut Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Just put the capri in for its mot, its got 2 pages of failures. Loads of corrosion all over the car, fractured coil springs on both sides, leaking fuel tank, rotten exhaust and more and more. Been told its unsafe to drive . Plan is to get it home on the back of a truck, strip out any good bits, and get saving to hopefully have another osf for march next year
Stu_B Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 My Anglia had 4 pages of fails in April... I had it MOT'd by August SAVE IT!
DEP Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Sorry to hear that m8, It had a good innings as they say
SmokeEm Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Don't get carried away Steve - might be easily savable with a 2nd hand mig & a bit of time
Takeshi Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Know exactly how you feel mate... I was in the same boat last Jan, with a MK3 Capri funny enough.
john_3.0s Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 get some pics up mate im sure it aint that bad
stevepeanut Posted October 28, 2009 Author Report Posted October 28, 2009 if I could weld I might be tempted, but the lad at the garage says theres loads and loads more corrosion thats not mot failure that he couldnt put down on the sheet. He also said its the worst car he's ever tested! That beats my girlfriends vw beetle, which 2 years ago held the title of worst car he's ever seen. Oh well time for a few and plans for 2010 more than likely another capri, or a mk4/mk5 cortina
BIGKEV Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Once upon a time I was phoned up 20 mins after I dropped off my old MK2 Escort for an MOT - it was the tester who was a family freind He told me to come and take the car away and use the 6 weeks MOT it had left and then Scrap it He said that if he wasnt a family freind that he would have condenmed the car instantly lol It was my first car how was I supposed to know that there was no Brakes ? It did stop - I just had to think about stopping 3/4 mile ahead lol. I used the gears mostly - wasnt till I had my second that I first used proper brakes on a mk2 escort
Stu_B Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 He also said its the worst car he's ever tested! That beats my girlfriends vw beetle, which 2 years ago held the title of worst car he's ever seen. My Anglia has that record at my local garage as well as longest MOT test ever ...but it's all sorted now & back on the road
Twinkle Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 m8 dont lose heart in it! had a similar thing with my first mk1 escort when i joined here. bought a mig and rebuilt it, still going strong even now about 6 years later
Mr Sam Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 dont let it go mate, keep a look out on the bay for a cheap mig and get practising come on its got mag fame and FF camelcade (~sp) fame chin up tough dude if worst come to worst make sure every bit salvageable is aved o that others can live on and have a for me....ive run out
stevepeanut Posted October 28, 2009 Author Report Posted October 28, 2009 He also said its the worst car he's ever tested! That beats my girlfriends vw beetle, which 2 years ago held the title of worst car he's ever seen. My Anglia has that record at my local garage as well as longest MOT test ever ...but it's all sorted now & back on the road how long mate? mine took 2 hours 2 mins! its a long longer these days with the computerisation
w p e Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 so from the last MOT till now its rotted that bad? or is this the first time you've taken it for it.s MOT since you''ve had it
stevepeanut Posted October 28, 2009 Author Report Posted October 28, 2009 so from the last MOT till now its rotted that bad? or is this the first time you've taken it for it.s MOT since you''ve had it I last mot'd the car in 2007 and spent £400 on welding, I sold it 2008 and someone else had it mot'd with failures on only minor faults as I have the failure sheet. Bought it back earlier this year, and its failed big time. So its odd that no welding was needed on the 2008 mot while someone else owned it.
w p e Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 get someone to look over it for you it cant have rotted that much in that short time.
caprinerd Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 i think tbh most of us have had cars with mot`s and the next mot it fails big time a doris i know bought a mk5 tina with 10 months mot and had a prob with the brakes(didnt stop and went past her house with a baby in the back) she ask me to look at the motor for her and if someone had hit her in the rear they would have ended up in the car it was that badthe brakes failed because the rear of the exhaust was banging on the axle and crushed the rear brake pipe that goes along the axle, the front floors well there was carpet and nothing else 3 A4 sheets with faults get it stripped and try and sort what you can steve or get another motor
bortaf Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Depends TBH i've seen badly coverd repair patches rust in 6 months, the weld rusts uber quick if it's not coverd properly and if some twonk has sealed it upo with silicone sealant they can rust out 4 times as bad in a few months easyly not all MOT testers prod as hard as they could
stevepeanut Posted October 28, 2009 Author Report Posted October 28, 2009 I think its realistically time to look for another car. I know the 2 brothers who run the garage, and they are 100% genuine, they mot'd my mk2 escort last year and found only a couple of silly things wrong with it. They know there old motors inside out, and have owned all kinds of old fords, so I trust them when they say its too far gone/needing a major resoration. Got to look at the positive, I can get excited about getting a new car
Andrade Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 I'd keep it, if it still moves it cannot be that bad. But if you made up your mind already heres some tina inspiration
stevepeanut Posted October 29, 2009 Author Report Posted October 29, 2009 I'd keep it, if it still moves it cannot be that bad. But if you made up your mind already heres some tina inspiration now I would love a mk3 tina
Takeshi Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 Pretty much as I said before, I had the same problem. The last MOT it had obviously was a joey, and I had to cut my losses.. http://www.oldskoolford.co.uk/phpBB2/vi ... highlight=
stevepeanut Posted October 29, 2009 Author Report Posted October 29, 2009 update, it came back to my house on the back of a recovery truck, both coil springs are fractured and its got almost no steering. The terrible ashley exhaust system dug into the truck, and it took us an hour to get it off the truck, with planks of wood, a trolley jack, and lots of revving and wheel spinning
Beakster Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 Really sorry to hear that Steve. The mechanics shouldn't be a big deal, but like you said its the rust that kills them. Always sortable, but takes so much time and effort its usually better to get another shell/car.
stevepeanut Posted October 30, 2009 Author Report Posted October 30, 2009 things have taken another turn last night my bird says "if you keep the car, and try to sort, and only for this car, heres £500 to get you started to buy a mig and some spares, and save the car" she absolutely loves the capri, so I think it might try sorting it. But view it as a very long term project over 2 or 3 years and still get another cheap osf to run around in
