jimbo Posted November 16, 2009 Report Posted November 16, 2009 Hi All, Does anyone have a preffered brand of screen sealant that that use on their OSF? I guess something that stays nice and flexible is a good thing, but otherwise I'm lost... Any suggestiosn welcome
Retro-gone. Posted November 16, 2009 Report Posted November 16, 2009 i can get you some but its grey not black, you can however wipe the ecxess off with white spirit.
Retro-gone. Posted November 16, 2009 Report Posted November 16, 2009 altho this is on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Car-Body-Windscre ... 3ef3976813
livewire7116 Posted November 16, 2009 Report Posted November 16, 2009 Nooooooooo dont use that! www.rejel.co.uk look for windscreen sealer called arbomast, its messy but works well and is used by all the windscreen companys, trick is to use lots of glass cleaner in a spray bottle, spray all over the body and glass before you seal it up, (best to remove the chrome insert if you have one put lots of sealer in til it squidges out on both sides then fit the insert back in, keep spraying with glass cleaner then use a body filler applicator to remove any excess. if you dont use the glass cleaner and try to do it dry it goes everywhere and is a bitch to clean up. if you use the stuff listed on the ebay link if you ever have to change the screen you will need a new rubber, dont use silicone as its great for a short term fix but when it cures properly will just leak again. the info and advice i have just given you is after 13yrs in the windscreen trade by the way but your welcome to listen to others
bortaf Posted November 16, 2009 Report Posted November 16, 2009 I use dum dum, mainly cos i have a few tins of it i bought a few years ago but it works fine That ebay ad is for adhesive for bonded in screens not sealant, use that and you'll never get the seal out again in one piece
jimbo Posted November 16, 2009 Author Report Posted November 16, 2009 Cheers for that Livewire....All seems like good advice.... Whilst you're sharing the knowledge, whereabouts should I apply the sealant. I assume a run a bead into the channel where the glass sits. But when I look at the "other" side of the seal, there are three channels. Which of the do I put sealant into? Also, I assume that I have to put chord into one of the channels to be able to pull it through from the inside. Which one would that be? Cheers again, Jim
immingham Posted November 16, 2009 Report Posted November 16, 2009 If you need some windscreen bond give us a shout, I've got a van full of the stuff . Being a windscreen fitter
jimbo Posted November 16, 2009 Author Report Posted November 16, 2009 Cheers for that. But I'm gonna hold out for some arbormast. It seems to get favourable reviews on a fair few classics forums Any hints or tips on fitting would be greatly appreciated though
livewire7116 Posted November 16, 2009 Report Posted November 16, 2009 Fit the screen to the car first, then seal between rubber and body and also in between rubber and glass, put plenty in as it will squirt out when the insert is fitted, when the rubber is fitted to glass and laying inside facing upwards on the stand you fit the string to the first big channel, if its a toughened screen you can be quite agressive with it but if laminated it maybe worth getting someone who has done it before or even finding a small windscreen firm or maybe a self employed guy to fit it for you and seal it, thier knowledge and experience is worth the money.
flyingbanana Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 whats a average price getting windows fitted........got to do mine soon front and back.....could do it my self but dont have the sealing stuff....and prob alot easier getting some one else to do it than me
livewire7116 Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 All depends on the person fitting, might be able to get someone to do for cash, i used to do it all the time for people i knew or who were put my way, not worked in the screen trade for 2 yrs now but still do jobs on and off, just fitted a lotus elise screen tonight and charged £40 which isnt dear considering the current climate, for a rubber fit screen i would charge £20 and prob an extra £10 for the sealing
