samurai Posted November 23, 2009 Report Posted November 23, 2009 How long is an english axle on a standard mk1 escort? And how long is a baby atlas axle? Thanks
Admin Vista Posted November 23, 2009 Admin Report Posted November 23, 2009 ATLAS AXLES Baby ... 48.5" long (wide) Narrow .. 50" long (wide) Standard .. 52" long (wide) An english matches the dimensions of the baby atlas, however many people incorrectly think a baby atlas is the one fitted to a mk1 3.0 litre capri when in fact that's a narrow atlas. An original baby atlas was a motorsport special order item
samurai Posted November 23, 2009 Author Report Posted November 23, 2009 Would my mexico brakes fit stright on to a baby axle? Thanks
Admin Vista Posted November 23, 2009 Admin Report Posted November 23, 2009 I'm sorry, I don't know for certain.
rallyesport04 Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 vista is correct with the axle lengths remember to measure from back plate to backplate i think its possible to fit the brakes to original baby atlas as a mod to escorts was to use 3.0 capri rear brakes (narrow atlas) on english axles as they were bigger but 99.9% of new/reproduced baby atlas use the 2.8 capri(wide atlas) as the basis the 2.8 capri halfshaft bearings are larger than english an narrow atlas bearings the only way then would be to enlarge the center hole an re drill the bolt holes
samurai Posted November 24, 2009 Author Report Posted November 24, 2009 The hunt for a baby atlas is on there is no point rebuilding my english diff as it whines!
Admin Vista Posted November 25, 2009 Admin Report Posted November 25, 2009 The hunt for a baby atlas is on I hope you're feeling flush. It'd be much cheaper to replace your english diff. The atlas is quite a lot heavier and unless you're running big power and grip you just don't need it.
over_head_cam Posted November 25, 2009 Report Posted November 25, 2009 If Posse has it an English is about 3 minutes long
lotusless Posted November 25, 2009 Report Posted November 25, 2009 If Posse has it an English is about 3 minutes long so true

samurai Posted November 26, 2009 Author Report Posted November 26, 2009 Im not after a axle which is done up for rallying, just a standard one...im sure ive seen them going for 150 pounds...or is that something else?
rallyesport04 Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 i would be very suprised to find a baby atlas at £150 it might be a koln at that price be carefull as the koln is 48.5" wide how to tell if its a koln the rear cover bolt pattern isnt symetrical these are found on european escorts
Admin Vista Posted November 26, 2009 Admin Report Posted November 26, 2009 Im not after a axle which is done up for rallying, just a standard one...im sure ive seen them going for 150 pounds...or is that something else? That's a narrow atlas from a mk1 3 litre capri not a baby atlas.

No, about 38mm wider Just picked up a mag with specs: Baby 48 1/2 inch and Narrow 49 7/8 inch. So 13.375mm longer or 6.6875mm eash side longer Round it off to 7mm eash side we'll say... I can get it under a mk1 just, maybe trim back the arch a few mm. Worth a try?
rallyesport04 Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 3.0 capri axle will not bolt straight on the saddles need cutting off and re positioning it will fit under standard archs only using 6j rims or smaller but it still may rub depending on tyres

Can the axle flange be skimmed alittle like 3mm and use the same halfshaft? The shaft would sit futher into the diff but would it cause an problems? Maybe i could skim 3mm off the end of the shaft also? I could do the machining at uni if they let me
rallyesport04 Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 machine the bearing collar so the halfshaft goes further into the diff no! machine the face maybe as long as the wheel stud has enough meat on it where it presses in question why bother fitting a atlas? in my eyes unless you running big bhp 200+ or plan on fitting a yb or torquey v6/v8 or massive wide gripy tyres it seems alot of effort for no real gain. atlas parts are over priced, lsds are far more expensive than english units and there isnt really much of a selection of cwp's unlike the english that has lots. narrow atlas halfshafts are quite rare unlike common english units, atlas axles are very heavy compared to english axles which will make you 0-60 worse an mpg worse by the time you have faffed about sorting out the halfshafts cutting of the saddles an repositioning them to fit a escort messed about getting the handbrake assay to fit/work. narrow atlas's have a 3.09 diff as standard so you will need to buy another cwp then have that fitted what is a pain in the arse so £150(axle) £80(cwp) atlas rebuid kit (?) and about 2 days labour fitting everything up. a english complete diff will cost no more than £150 for a desireable ratio like 3.77 it will take 2 hours max to change job done i know what i would do

Ill whip out the diff to see whats the damage next week or something and go form there.

I'm not sure what you're using as a conversion factor but there's 25.4mm in an inch so using your measurements the narrow atlas is 35.325mm wider so 17.6625mm each side. In any case I'd rather go with 48.5" baby and 50" narrow (as stated earlier in the thread) those are the measurements I read repeated again and again by experts so I'd take their word over a magazine.

Only think about going Atlas if you are going to be fitting wide wheels mate. It will be a lot of hassle for no real point. Plenty of people are using English axles with well over 200BHP.
