I went to buy a 5" long piece of hexagonal iron bar 2cm wide (the rods are about 1cm wide). Now I gave the steering rack to a guy who will be shortening the rods by 12mm from each side and using 2" of hexagonal bar per side as a sleeve. It should be ready by next week. I'll keep you guys posted, and thanks for everyone who helped me out on this one

how come u didnt just cut the rod & rod ends in the end???

Well for no big reason really, just to keep the rod ends as a whole as they are a 'consumable' part. If I ever have to change them I can just screw in the standard part without having to cut it again.

Ok so this morning i went to pay a visit to the guy who will be modifying the steering rack for me. he says that he can add welding the the non-threaded part of the rod, then smooth it out and continue adding thread to that. As it's close to what i had in mind to do initially we agreed to go around that road - it should be ready by monday, so i'll keep you posted

hope everyone had a great christmas day!

sounds like the best idea yet. Sometimes the easiest solutions get overlooked. It will look like the rods haven't been modified, cool. Will have to come and have a look when i eventually get over to malta again.

So I just got the rack back and went to mount it straight away. Basically he thickened the rod with welding, smoothed it out and added thread over it. The result is very neat and you cannot tell that it has been modified at all.

With this out of the way the front end of my estate is officially complete :D:D:D:D:D the last target for 2009 is reached
