Anybody into it on here?

Thinking I might like to take this up as another hobby....

Can it be done on the cheap? I dont really want or need another expensive hobby.

Could I get away with say £3k including the car? Or am I still in holiday mode

been doing the off road lark for years now, landrovers are good but very expensive, if you are going for that try getting a disco 1 or classic range rover, v8s are the best for grunt but show them a puddle and they soon turn into v5s so have plenty of wd40 to hand, I would start with a sj410 susuki and shove the swift engine in it, much much cheaper and so simply to work on, we do a clutch while out with just a few tools and stood on the inner wings and lifted the engine out by hand.

couple of pics of mine

Love the Landrover 8)

And funnily enough have already started looking at Suzuki's.

I didnt think about the Swift engine - that is a fantastic idea.

The only problem with them is when they're standard they look a bit erm, gay  Modified off-road ones on the other hand

my disco is kited out and heavy I have had the p1ss taken out of me many times by the sjs and even a very modified vitara which he only paid £85 for as a base to work with, looks gay or not can be very very good of road.

mmmm really starting to think now!

quick example

new de carbon lift kit on my landy £380 and was a bastard to do.

on the suki £8 for the shackles and slung axle under spring other then moded prop and longer brake lines free, so a 9" lift for pennies compaired to a 2" lift on the landy for nearly £300

Thats exactly what I wanted to know.

It doesnt necessarily have to be an expensive hobby then....

* off to pistonheads now then *

it can be if you go the landy route, but I would never swap I've took my disco though things you wouldn't think possible (mine a diesel).

over the years I must have spent £5k on the green one and as it stands I would struggle to get £750 for it, but that was never the point.

Its all about the fun, we used to hire a pit near us called tixover only about 6 motors there, but if you got stuck in the clay you where buggered.

also green lanings a laugh we have one near by that goes straight over the 3rd fairway of a golfcoarse and the green lane has priority  wot a laugh :D

I would quit my job and just do that all day everyday

this is something I have been thinking of getting into too. I keep the osfs just for shows now, and run a mazda pickup all year. But I have been thinking of selling the pickup and getting a 4x4. My mate has had a few landrovers including a lightweight V8 one, and he says I'd love it if I tried some off roading

How old do you have to be to do it ??

me and my boss did some off roading on the way home in the snow  was really funny,

and me dads mate does it some where in kent (anyone know it?)

How long does the average car last? SJ's appear to be very cheap, but do they fall apart ?

the landys are a lot tougher but the sjs are no where near the weight so can take a fair bit of abuse on what looks to be a flimsy motor, the aftermarket parts for the landys is unbeliveable but tread carfully as you car pay powerfull money for stuff you just dont need where as for the sukis etc the parts are harder to come by so you need a touch more imagination, dont forget about daihastus and even the lardas they can cope fairly well we even jacked up a 4x4 fiat panda sicilly which was a real laugh.

I started with a standard motor and just kept adding and improving (find its limits make it better and go further)

I dont do so much now but its still a great laugh

just looked at couple of suzuki sj's, they look similar or maybe the same as a suzuki samurai that I hired on holiday in gran canaria

They're known as either SJ, Samurai or S!erra depending on location.

4x4 ing is great fun , used to go loads with my mate in a heavily modified v8 disco 2. I have a v6 24v shogun for sale at the moment , needs a fuel pump sorting but will be for sale quite cheap as need the space

love off roading, my next project is gonna be a Landy, gonna buy a basket case defender and go for the hardcore offroad look with it

I been looking around all day at stuff, pretty much decided to sell my pickup and have a go at offroading. Totally confused as to what to get at the moment. Will have £1000 ish. Probs best with something like a diahatsu or a suzuki samurai/vitara. Seems to be loads of land rover discoverys going cheap too

i used to do a bit with a lada cossack, gotta be honest it managed to do most things we threw at it ,

ive raced autograss for 20 odd yrs but ill be truthfull, off roading is the best fun u could ever have with ur clothes on , im thinking of looking for an sj

the discos are good Steve but a little top heavy but I would go 200tdi than v8 they just hate the wet stuff, with my snork I've been through 4 ft of water but it does p1ss the alternator of a bit, just be carefull to check under the boot carpet they do tend to rot real bad around there, look at the red one which was rotten as a pair in the rear so just destroyed it off road, where as with defenders its normaly the bulkhead and rear crossmembers, I like my sj because its totaly striped out and dont care if I trash it, the 90 is to small and I keep smacking the window with elbow so have to drive window open.
