a freind of mine is building a mk1 escort with the intention of fitting the YB turbo lump but is understanderbly frustrated with the money they're selling for so we sat around and discussed/trawled ebay for alternatives for use in an old skool ford so what suggestions do you have

heres the criteria;-

4 cylinder

turbocharged with 400bhp availible without spending thousands

obviuosly needs to be suitable for RWD application

all we came up with was a datsun sr20det?

Discuss

No idea but I had an N plate one and liked the drive but the car itself felt cheap and tinny.

What about the C20LET? The turbo charged derivative of the XE fitted to Calibra and cavalier 4 x 4's?

How about a donkey out of a Honda S2000 with some kind of wooshh wooshh bang bang thing strapped to the side of it ?

OR, stick a blower on the side of a Zetec / Duratec ?

OR, bit different and am not sure if / how you could RWD it but what about an EVO or VW 2.0t unit ?

Mind you, problem with doing stuff that's a bit different is that it often can be quite expensive i suppose.

Bit random, what are the new ish BMW or merc engines like ? There's plenty of those in breakers yards...

Would love to see a Volvo V5 in an OSF 8)

a what, what were they in??

 Sorry had V on my mind while typing Volvo.

I meant the straight-5 turbo volvo engine.

oh right, they came up in conversation but aint they a pain to get a gearbox/bell housing for?

Get on TS and speak to the Swedish boys.

If I was to guess i'd say they would give a YB a huge run for their money.

seen the volvo video before thats pretty sik!!! but goin with the other fella hu said about the s2000 engine. i would like to find a slaughtered s2000 that i can put all the running gear in my escort. thats 250bhp of unstressed N/A power on throttle bodies with a full stainless outlet manifold as standard!! six speed gearbox could be used aswell!!! imagine the potential power! i remeber in the escort edition classicford with baz's mexico's on the front there is a mk1 escort in there its a rally car with full s2000 running gear and i believe its pretty mental. i no they rev to about 9 grand!

My eventual plans for my volvo/ford half breed.

2.3 with a 16v head and a turbo or supercharger strapped on .

Once moneys better just going to pick the parts up as I go along. Checking in with the local scrappies every now and again.

Try asking a scrappy for cossie stuff and watch the pound signs come up in their eyes!!

in a addition of retro or classic this year i saw a volvo t5 2.3 turbo lump (also found in focus RS) in a mk1 looked a bit of a squeeze as its a 5 cylinder where as a 4 cylinder will fit with intercooler and rad without cutting the bulkhead out. vaux 2.0 LET is turbo my bro is into vaux an is converting his XE into LET is much cheaper than cossie what about a zetec turbo convertion not sure about price never looked but its been done loads of time if your willing to cut the bulkhead ever considered skyline its a big lump but good power from the off

nissan engines commonly used now as they are cheap and good HP

SR20 2 litre (as fitted to 200sx silvias)

CA18 1.8 litre (as fitted to 180sx and N13 pulsars)

(as fitted to dave gardiners cover on the front of Nov 09 Classic Ford)

both these conversion done many times before

there is a CA20 very different and non turbo (single cam 8 valve) not an option really

nissan engines fit very well

heres a link to how they fit

and here

Stick with the YB mate, pound for pound (especially turbo'd), strength and cc it's hard to beat, easy to fit, looks good and all steel internals as standard..... :ykt:

Not really a suggestion, more thinking out loud, but mx5 lumps are tidy little units, and bolt on turbo conversions are available, they even come with 6cog boxes in later models. I can't imagine YB horsepower though.

Both flavour of turbocharged nissan units are tried and tested.

Is it the 1.8 thats know for chocolate bearings if not regulaly serviced?

this is never been the case here in Oz never had ia big end failure !

they are super reilable

but like any engine it has to be maintained and serviced regularly

and before someone ups the boost i wonder whether the condition of the engine is checked first ??
