caprilaser
I've put a Yb turbo in my cortina and am looking at the options for keeping my brake servo. As there won't be enough vacuum from the inlet manifold I was thinking of using an electric vacuum pump if I can find one. Does anyone know of any cars that were fitted with then as standard? Electric cars use them apparently but theres not an abunance of them in scrappy's round here! I read sierra/granada's might have had em but can't be sure where I read it now. You can buy kits from the USA but they are pretty pricey... I know you can just remove the servo but I'd need a new brake master cylinder etc and it seems more hassle than just wiring in a pump! Fiesta Steve
I may be being daft here but why wouldn't their be enough vacuum in your inlet manifold ??
caprilaser
Hi steve, due to the turbo the manifold pressure will be possitive when on throttle (Cossies didn't have a vac from the manifold they had a seperate abs pump setup). I know you don't usually have the throttle open when you are braking but as far as I know the servo won't work properly if used off the manifold presure. GT_lenny
the old pug 1.9 diesels had quite a small neat little vac pump which i'm sure could be run off the fan belt

Ok, thats what I thought, you only (usually) brake with the throttle shut and thought there must be a vacuum in the manifold ??.. I turbocharged an RS 1600i once and the servo worked fine, don't know if that would be the same.

Tom
seems like a lot of trouble to go to when you can run it off the manifold

rallyesport04
seems like a lot of trouble to go to when you can run it off the manifold turbo manifolds dont vac all the time so the servo assist wouldnt work as well as it could using a electric unit the servo assist will always be at max
Sheepy
Volvo! electric vac pump. fitted one to my mates suzuki 4x4 diesel a few weeks ago! but you will need a vacuum presure switch, or the pump will run all time, or just when you brake, depending on how you wire it! caprilaser
I've got a SAAB one coming in the next day or so to try out, also found a SAAB pressure switch too on ebay for a few quid that I should hopefully be able to rig up to work with it. I'll let you know how it goes!
