Burt Reynolds Posted April 30, 2010 Report Posted April 30, 2010 Putting Zinc Primer to my bare metal ford....anything else worth smacking on top of it (aside from paint of course?) Someone said - don't put Zinc Primer on it put acid etch on it, someone else said zinc primer then a filling primer, another said acid etch then a filler... man... Can i put Zinc primer, filler primer and basecoat? Ta Burt
Fiesta Steve Posted April 30, 2010 Report Posted April 30, 2010 An acid etch will adhere better to bare metal than a zinc primer, only a thin coat is needed, put your zinc primer over that if you want
PaulMags Posted May 4, 2010 Report Posted May 4, 2010 once you've put your zinc primer on put some filler primer on make sure you wet and dry it down afterwards .it'll be a nice base for your paint to sit on and give you a better finish.
Burt Reynolds Posted May 10, 2010 Author Report Posted May 10, 2010 Cheers again..does high build primer need a hardener? I've heard several places that said it requires hardener. I'm spraying with a 60 litre 1.5hp compresser, gravity fed gun with a 1.8 nozzle, carbon filter and an inline water trap and inline air regulator. Obviously a DIY job, but can't afford 2-5k to get it done professionally...so really taking my time on this.. Also - why can't i buy pre paint anywhere and just those stupid cloths... I used the pre soaked paket of 10 cloths but all the sh*t came off and the bodywork was full of fibres from the cloth - they're crap? I've Zinc primered the front valance already and i'm going to etch prime the rest of the car at a panel at a time, high build primer, wait till it dries, wet n dry then white base coat ready for mineral blue paint.. If i'm dicking anything up or missing something i'd appreciate it if you experts would point it out. Burt
Fishtailparka Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 Do you mean you can't find panel wipe? Plenty in the local auto factors around here. On ebay too last time I looked for it.
dannyb Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 in all the bodyshops ive worked in zink primer has only been used when fitting a weld on panel.
Burt Reynolds Posted May 11, 2010 Author Report Posted May 11, 2010 Yeah, the body shops in south west london only have those stupid cloths in packets. Oh well, it'll have to be fleabay i suppose. As for the body...well Mr Tarrant - i've made my decision - final answer.... i'm etch priming the whole car, although there are a couple of small panels that will require welding. Presumably zinc primer then etch over the top...?
flyingbanana Posted May 11, 2010 Report Posted May 11, 2010 nu again will send you some panel wipe in the post.....they do sell on gaybay has well 01234 355990
bortaf Posted May 11, 2010 Report Posted May 11, 2010 I only use the zinc primer where i'm welding THROUGH the paint that's what it's for as a weld through primer so the inside of the join isn't bare
Burt Reynolds Posted May 11, 2010 Author Report Posted May 11, 2010 Ta peeps - as ever the oracle when it comes to helpful advice
