if you only recently brought it i would have thought you wouldn't have to pay the back tax.......but then it wouldn't surprise me if they try and get the money from you in the slightest.....and if they do i would contest with a dated receipt

Right. . . . :?

So, when i apply for a V5 in my name, there's going to be some back tax to pay?

the car is taxed till the end of august 2010 if you all have a look at the dvla enquiry date of liabilty isnt until 01/10/10 so you have a month before it needs to be sorn or your liable for it to be taxed again

usually takes about 14-28 days for a logbook so if ya get ya finger out you should have it by the end of august

The car isn't taxed at all, it's SORNED until the end of September (not August) but will need to be SORNED again as soon as the V5 arrives in the new keepers name (as pointed out by Bortaf)

Hmmmm. . . .

The transaction was a simple one, I gave the seller some cash, he gave me the car and a complete un-written-on V5 in the name of the owner before him.

Should i complete this as if i bought the car from the guy on the V5?

A squiggle for his signature, send it off, and hope for the best?

It's your only option but make sure you put the day you post it as the day of the transfer. Then sorn it again when you get the new V5 through
