Andrade Posted August 23, 2010 Report Posted August 23, 2010 Hi mate, i had a similar issue (though not identical) on two cars so far. 1971 Vauxhall Viva 1.3 Pinto: The car on idle was fine and revs properly, timing was good, compression was good, spark was there. However after driving it for about 15 mins it used to cut out and stop. I tried everything, electronic ignition, changed the carb, new fuel lines, new fuel pump, new leads, performance coil... it still did it. I had a king filter installed like the one below, and I had changed the filter inside it, so it never crossed my mind that it could be the issue, but it was. I replaced it with a 1€ in-line filter and voila, worked like a charm. 1976 Capri Mk2 1.3 I done a list of parts to replace so I won't have any issues with it since it's my daily. Electronic ignition, had it set up professionally including valve spacing, timing, and carb. Once again, I used to drive it for about 10/15 mins and it was starting to work rough and cutout. I started blaming overheating, coil, distributor cap starting to crack, wrong plugs and stuff like that. I changed the coil and leads because I had them lying about in the garage and it still did it. While at work I was thinking that this sounds all too familiar, and on my way back home I stopped and bought a new filter. It worked.... I'd give it a shot since it doesn't cost anything.
chunkys mk1 Posted August 23, 2010 Report Posted August 23, 2010 don't give up mate i put 40s on mine and they did that found it to be the pump jets blocked if you can get a mirror and look down the carb then open the throttle and see if it sprays fuel in while not running ,mine took ages to find but ok now
Jiffer Posted August 23, 2010 Author Report Posted August 23, 2010 its booked in friday for a sesion on the rolling road. I am going to wait and see what he can do with it
samurai Posted August 23, 2010 Report Posted August 23, 2010 Stupid question but do they have different jets to play with there right?

Jeff HPE Motorsport Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 Just a thought mate do you have the pump mounted vertical or horizontal as it will make a difference? The facet pump works best vertical & I do know some people that have had the same problem with the pump mounted horizontal!! As well do you have a fuel pressure regulator & what pressure do you have it set at?? Good luck Jeff Harris..

I have the fuel pump inside a plastic box because of the car still being + earth and mounted vertical. I have a filter king regulator with the plug on it for pressure gauge also had a gauge at the carbs and bang on 2.5psi I've tried a little higher and lower but no difference. cheers mate
Toby Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 I've recently heard from a man who struggled for a long time with a similar issue. You say the carbs have been overhalled? So had his. His problem turned out to be that the auxillery venturi's had been put back in the carbs 180 degrees out so the idle circuit was fine but there was no fuel for the main circuit. Worth a check.
