scene without having to worry about sticking £50 of fuel in it every time

looks like i will be fitting lawnmower engine in the old girl , on the point of revs iam hoping mine does hold out and still rev a bit as ive gone really short with pistons and long rods ' not xflow pistons '

 

He said he's intending to get on with it soon - be good to get it in for this spring. :ykt:

 

Long rods should help mate - your's is all steel anyway mate - Arrow thought mine should be good to 9K and although your pistons are probably a little heavier than flat tops, like mine, you'll probably be rev limited by your valve train anyway, as I've found out with broken valve springs. :thumbsup:

You maybe right Wayne, but I believe that yb's should have turbo's ,

 

the way the lord god Cosworth made them ! :thumbsup:

My pistons should be Lighter as there alot smaller than xflow pistons well 3 1/4 of the size Xflow compression height of 38.8 Mine are 30.43 :wink:

Your right about valve train fella , would need to limit it somewhere late 8s although with my caculation which are crap should be good for 9000+

BDA / BDG head Next me thinks after ive broken a few bits LOL

@Toby - Regarding more Xflow cc's (I guess same rule applies for other engines) & depending on what application it is for, from my findings I think when choosing to go with a different stroke/bore and rod ratio the important thing is to have a sensible R/S ratio as it has an effect on bottom end RPM longevity and its loading. So for long rods the piston speeds are slower at TDC range and faster at BDC range and long rods have more dwell at TDC so will aid in cylinder filling but only at higher RPMs. The bore wear should be reduced as piston skirt thrust is less. Also normally with longer rods the rotating weight will be greater unless their fancy light weight jobbies. Piston material and CH is important due to long rods wanting to push them out of the deck so pin position, skirt, oil & ring seal due to piston rock need to be correct. Cylinder filling at low RPM could be a problem but other engine parts can be factors to all this...

 

Ref that Replica 'L' block - you need to look at www.davidgathercole.co.uk click Engines at the top and theres also a Gallery to drool over. Shed loads needed but some 8) stuff on view.

 

@puddy - I might be wrong but I think that QED get their L blocks the ones they are ment to be remanufacturing from somewhere else :wink:

but it was intendid for n/a originaly ford just got greedy so a blower was fitted. so i thought i'd do the deed instead :D

True, as I understand it, application will come into the decision of which parts to choose but possibly only in the ultimate engine. Price and availabilty of parts might be equally important. :ykt:

 

My combination of parts was kind of forced on me by desired stroke, piston availabilty, rod availabilty and block height. I have ended up with a huge compromise on R/S ratio. With concern I asked Geoff Richardson (who I have never had the opportunity since to speak to) if my combination would be ok - he suggested the poor R/S ratio would have an effect but probably not one I would notice, perhaps altering the rev range by a few hundred rpms. In the ultimate engine I mentioned before, ie a Hot Rod racer who needs everything in his bag - this could matter, my car is just for annoying Subaru owners! :lol:

Not sure I can get my head round this - surely the rod angularity is the same top and bottom :? this is what is effecting the piston speed?

 

The bore wear should be reduced as piston skirt thrust is less. Also normally with longer rods the rotating weight will be greater unless their fancy light weight jobbies.

 

The weights might be greater but possibly this is negated to some extent by the piston changing direction slower at each end of the stroke - side thrust is definately reduced as you say. :thumbsup:

 

Who's is the masive stroke X Flow you referred to in your earlier post? :thumbsup:
