sambo Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 After fitting all my new legs etc it seems that the inserts have less thread than my last struts. So, when i bolted them on, the 'top-hat' nut doesn't seem to pull the insert up enough. Am i right in thinking that you can get shorter top-hat nuts for bilstein inserts? Here's a pic. You can see the amount of thread left!
ratman Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 I had to cut my top hat nuts down to fit
sambo Posted September 8, 2010 Author Report Posted September 8, 2010 Cheers. IT seems like thats the way to go. strange that i have to cut about 10mm off.Why does nothng ever fit! Escort stuff has been around for years! surely people know how to make stuff that fit/works!
PlopPlop Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 I did'nt have to cut mine so maybe you can get different nuts, although I did get mine secondhand so they could've been cut by previous owner, but they did'nt look cut, I'll have to double check
sambo Posted September 9, 2010 Author Report Posted September 9, 2010 Its about 1 1/4" long. I thought you could get different lengths? i'll turn mine down in a lathe but the sleeve part helps locate the insesrt into the rose joint in the top mount so i musn't take too much off.
cjay2004 Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 i think its because if the leg came with roller bearing tops the shaft is shorter , if it had normal tops there longer? i noticed this as i had a pair with roller bearing tops & a pair with standard tops???

I still dont understand, Bilstien struts have been around for years, companies have been manufacturing strut tops for years..... and we still have to modify things?
sambo Posted September 10, 2010 Author Report Posted September 10, 2010 The thread is damaged on one of my original ones so i bought another pair. they arrived today and they are even longer than the ones i had! Original ones are: 29mm long total length. New ones are: 37mm total length. ???
PlopPlop Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 Should've just got one an cut it in half
