Jiffer Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 I really do like a crossflow and know i can pick a 1700 off ebay for under a grand. But i have found out before (to my peril) that these engines are not what they are always described as. To get a crossflow up to 150 its going to cost me 2k from a repitable builder such as vulcan engines. addititonal power after this means more rebuilds and more money. With a 2l blacktop zetec, i think i can do the conversion for around 1k and hit 170 and Following this performance mods are much more reasonable. Going up pub now to mull it over.
moredoorAsh Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 I had the same question going through my head when my x-flow gave up on me. I stuck with the x-flow as it seemed the easier option for me at the time, but thats cos its an escort. If i had a cortina or something with a slightly larger engine bay then the x-flow wouldn't have been an option and some sort of moddern twin cam would have been worked in there
banarama Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 i think crossflow,keeps the charecter to the car
GT_lenny Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 you know which way i'm gonna go- even if i have to come down peterbogger to take you for a spin in mine
Synergy Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 IMHO if I was restoring a Mexico / RS2000 or something of that nature I wouldn't even consider a Zetec or any other modern engine but I'm not so it's a Zetec on Webers all the way for me and my money
LGreen Posted September 29, 2010 Report Posted September 29, 2010 I agree, I was lucky enough to rebuild an RS2000 with my dad when i was younger which he gave to me and would only ever consider putting a pinto in that but I'm building another one now which was a boggo 1100 so going something a bit different with the engine choice in that. LG
zetecmk2 Posted September 29, 2010 Report Posted September 29, 2010 zetec's ain't the best engines in the world.....but they're one of the cheapest ways to 150hp. once you have one installed, it takes a couple of hours and £50 to replace so you can afford to abuse it. i buy them when i come across them cheap, and store them until i need them, otherwise you end up paying £100!!

mr zefect Posted September 29, 2010 Report Posted September 29, 2010 Zetec ive been abusing mine for well over 4 years and only just geting tired. The only dilema do i go black top for the next one does anyone no whether its worth it.
Grizzley Dell Posted September 29, 2010 Report Posted September 29, 2010 depends what you want power or sound. imo i would go xflow cause theres no better sound than a screaming xflow & alot more fun on the street. id rather thrash a xflow sideways than feather the throttle on a zetec. KEEP IT OLD SKOOL

442 Posted September 30, 2010 Report Posted September 30, 2010 Got the very same dilemma m8!! thought about it for ages and even bought manifold and a zetec but after the 220 mile round trip hastings run, xflow didnt miss a beat and sounded cool all day. nice n simple to work on and looks right in the bay too.......keepin zetec just in case i have a moment tho lol!!! keep xflow
petrolhead Posted September 30, 2010 Report Posted September 30, 2010 A crossflow always goes faster than the paper figures or BHP indicate. Plus they are one of the best sounding engines: I've got 131lbft torque which I think is about the same or more than a 2 litre zetec. That said, Zetec Mk2, has a very good point about the zetecs cheapness- it really is a disposable engine.
sambo Posted September 30, 2010 Report Posted September 30, 2010 Whats more important? Power or having the 'right' engine? Good power X-flows do come up every now and again and not always for silly money. Maybe put the zetec in and get one of the BDA cam covers? Then it looks 10 x better than a x-flow. I guess 150 BHP for relative peanuts isnt to be sneezed at.
petrolhead Posted September 30, 2010 Report Posted September 30, 2010 Yes, those BDA cam covers do look soooo right
oliwally Posted September 30, 2010 Report Posted September 30, 2010 Ask yourself this,How many Mondildos and Fcukus's are scrapped due to broken cambelts? How many Crossflows died due to timing chain failures? Its a know fact that silver top zetec have a rubbish tensioner that cracks over time and then explodes without warning. black tops are not much better as they still do the same and made out of plastic
Arfur Posted September 30, 2010 Report Posted September 30, 2010 50/50 on the votes at the mo! If it's all down to cost, then the Zetec's a no-brainer, but pushrod all the way for me (but then I'm old).

Fiesta Steve Posted September 30, 2010 Report Posted September 30, 2010 I've voted This is what a budget spec Crossflow can do, imagine a hot one !!;
petrolhead Posted September 30, 2010 Report Posted September 30, 2010 BIG G has got a point. Pintos really do suit Mk2 Cortinas and for the price of a 150bhp xflow you could prob get a 180bhp pinto and they are dead easy to work on. I vote for 2.2 Pinto on motorbike throttle bodies!
