Retromotorsport Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 Vista ... as Fiats ..opps I mean Ladas go, once the engine is sorted the cars are pretty damm good ... infact really good, if you watch the first part , look at the back axle ... planted on its standard 5 link, yep 5 link, no cart springs in there ... and the front is just let down by the tyre tuck, camber and spring/damper rates. There was one that was circuit racing with the Gp4 Fiat arches on it ... and its didnt look bad. They other plus side.. the steel the Ruskies used was better than the Italian steel. It sorta looked like this
Admin Vista Posted January 15, 2007 Admin Report Posted January 15, 2007 I take your point, but what your saying essentially is once you've spent a shit load of money on it, it's a good car. Well surely you could apply that theory to virtually anything If for instance I bought an Allegro or an Alfa Arna and spent huge amounts on a non standard high spec engine, RWD conversion, fancy suspension package etc etc, that could end up being a race winner in the right hands too couldn't it? But because you've spent a shitload of money on it and converted everything to make it competative, is it still the source car? I stand by my opinion that Lada's and specifically the Riva is one of the worst cars to grace British roads. Though I will dilute my opinion slightly to include the phrase "in stock trim"
D A N Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 Cossie or V8 engine in a otherwise standard looking Riva Estate would be funny.
Gonzo Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 I've got a renault 5 I love my renault You can blame the old bag who used to live across the road from my old man for my hatred. she had one that was about ten million years old and whenever she started it you couldn't see for blue smoke! bloody thing was knackered but she refused to get rid... that and the starter sounded like it was chewing on shrapnel. like fingernails down a blackboard but 1,000 times worse...
Retromotorsport Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 Thats the things Vista... its not that expensive ... Get a mk1 / 2 escort (£2000+), chuck out the 1100cc x-flow and sling in an all singing and dancing HPE pinto... straight cut box.. new leafs, new dampers ..lowered springs up front etc etc Now grab a Lada (£200-).. engine, box, lowering springs and dampers and its allready 5 linked ..cheap as chips and you'll blow the Saxo's away with a LADA !!!!! And i know you love a challenge... you've got an Alfa

And i know you love a challenge... you've got an Alfa It was a challenge, an expensive one too. rebuilding a quad cam dry sump V8 with mechanical fuel injection that almost nobody lists or makes parts for let alone manuals for? Then getting the suspension sorted from the horrible wobbly thing that Alfa produced it as? Got all that done now I just need to find me some 4 pot calipers off a late 70's 7 series BMW in order to get the brakes a bit better. Joys of classic ownership eh? It turns heads in a way I've never seen though, most people have never seen or heard of a Montreal.

Retromotorsport Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 Vista ... your going to have to take the Alfa to Boxhill... maybe i'll even slip out the workshop then... its been a few years since i've seen one.. may even have been yours
Admin Vista Posted January 16, 2007 Admin Report Posted January 16, 2007 It's a long way for me to Boxhill, but what the hell I was born, grew up and went to school just down the road so it'd be good to look around the old stomping ground again (Oxshott heath here I come) When is the next meet, just had a look in the meets section and can't see anything on it other than a map.
