TILBROOK Posted January 24, 2012 Report Posted January 24, 2012 thats because they are cheap grade iron. i have 16 spline quaife shafts and not broke one yet
The Transplanter Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 N/A = Uprated English Turbo = Atlas
TILBROOK Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 N/A = Uprated English Turbo = Atlas im turbo 300bhp and let it off the line @7000rpm with drag slicks
Jiffer Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 I did two standard english shafts on a run at the pod with slicks and destroyed a brand new slipper, changed to tran x shafts never had a problem since. viewtopic.php?f=89&t=128321 viewtopic.php?f=89&t=128678
The Transplanter Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 N/A = Uprated English Turbo = Atlas im turbo 300bhp and let it off the line @7000rpm with drag slicks Cool Do you trust it 100% though when you launch it??? The TransX shafts are beefy mofo's but how long will that take that kind of punishment? I used to smash English's to smitherines in the 80's with a Pinto, but things have moved on since then it seems Im building what will be a 300-400lbft torque MK2 at the moment and have just bought the Atlas. Would much prefer to use an English but cant see it being upto the job long term!
RS2kSX Posted January 25, 2012 Author Report Posted January 25, 2012 that's my opinion too, how long will uprated shafts last? I've heard that quaife have been compared to chocolate just not as tasty... also it was strange to find that i had absolutist no drive with one shaft gone and an ATB fitted. thought I'd at least get some sort of drag through the diff. (I'm aware that the ATB never locks but i just sat there on tick over with the prop going round) how much were the Trans X ones?

I know the TransX setups have been bullet proof on the N/A's but would be intrested to hear more stories like yours on Turbo'd motors Once uprated, I would be worried about the crownwheel itself as they aint much bigger than scalextric Are you using a 3.54 ?
TILBROOK Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 i use a 3.77 diff. 23"x7" tyre not sure of the torgue but i can sometimes get 1 front wheel off the floor and yes its the car in sig. the diff has got all new heavy duty tekton bearings.

Retromotorsport Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 I just wrote this on another thread .. thats 2 threads asking about English axles.. wheres the ' Will my Atlas last' thread .. how many times do you see ' wanted english shaft/cwp... just broken mine.' and how many times do you see ' wanted atlas shafts cwp' Tom dosnt want to get the hassle with English axles, theres been posts on here saying,'my diffs whining' .. 'had my axle built by Joe Bloggs and its shit itself' Its all well and good someone saying ... 'i had an english on my pinto car and its fine' ...but has he got your tyres, the difference between Firestone Ditchfinders and Yokos is a big bang from the back. Yers ago I used to be in the breakers hunting for English diffs and shafts .. because at least once a month i had a breakage, and that lasted till i fitted an atlas.. could i tell the difference in handling, no, i'm not Senna.. the stopwatch showed the difference though, a lap was average, instead of being 20 minutes long... takes the recovery truck 19minutes to pull you off the track after you've blown a shaft or crownwheel on the start of a 15minute race. With an English, its not ' will it cope with ***BHp ' its 'how long before it goes bang' Now if you have 300ft/lb (BHP cant break anything), skinny tyres, it will last a long time, as the power will overcome grip, and you cant break something thats not gripping, newtons laws ... but if it grips with that torque .. bang. and it gets worse with final drives having a big numbers.. 100 ft/lb x 3:1 1st gear = 300 ft/lb .. final drive of 4:1 300ft/lb x4= 1200ft/lb Oh and i'd rather have weak shafts than strong... a shaft breaks mid corner you can catch the slide.. the CWP spits its teeth..instant lock up, just like you've pulled the handbrake up!!! so i dont like Atlas side gears on the weak English CWP And yes, Tom supplies my customers with Atlas's, but from him, not me, i dont sell them.
Retromotorsport Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 Oh..and the ATB not allowing you drive, its because its torque sensing, if you take one wheel up in the air ( effectivly the same as losing a shaft) there is no difference in torque reaction between the wheels.. hence no drive, the ATB cant work with nothing. Brilient road and ttrackday diffs.. crap on the snow and loose.
RS2kSX Posted January 31, 2012 Author Report Posted January 31, 2012 ok i've given up... found a 3.44 atlas with caliper mounts fitted, Polly bushed single leaf springs, 2x a frame kits fitted 2"blocks. gonna try to collect over the weekend and size it up, see how it fits with existing saddles and wheels??
