Has anyone got any tips on protecting areas of bare metal while working on it?

I can't seem to find a paint that stops rust and is easy to sand off.

is there any difference in red oxide primer and basic grey high build primer (obveously other than the colour and the high build giving a thicker layer)

as far as i understand red oxide is non porous so wont let the water rust the metal but other primers are porous so the metal will still rust even though its painted!

I use red oxide a lot at work and can honestly say its crap, lol. I think it may have contained a lot of lead years ago which is no longer used and as far as I'm concerned its just red primer instead of grey etc.. :(:

That sounds good as it says it can be painted over, but then on a different page it says:

'The label on a can of Gibbs Brand says that "you can paint right over it". However, common sense will tell you not to paint over an oily surface that isn't clean.

To paint metal that has been treated with Gibbs Brand, simply begin by wiping it down with whatever surface cleaner is recommended by the manufacturer of the particular paint system that you are using, and proceed as you normally would.

Due to the tremendous variety of ingredients that are used in paints, it is not possible to be absolutely certain that Gibbs Brand is compatible with every paint on the market. However, we are not aware of any compatability issues with any particular paint.'

Kinda sounds like you can paint straight over it as long as you have made sure that you've cleaned it all off

Has anyone tried WD40 to protect bare metal? I've heard conflicting things about the effect on the paint finish

if its clean bare metal just a light dust coat of acid8 etch primer worked well for me, it just takes a light scrub with some 80 grit to clean off for welding

and yep red oxide aint what it used to be as fiesta steve said its now just red primer
