clunking sound from rear axle

the escort just passed its mot so just got to get tax and im all road legal.

but on the way home i noticed a real loud clunking sound coming from the rear axle its running a lsd that had all new seals when it was put back in the car and only done about 15 miles.

i took the wheels off and when i turn the half shaft there is a fair bit of movement berfore it turns the other wheel is that normal.

any suggestions.

desperate to get all the little bits sorted for CF show.

when your car was mot'd, did they put it the rolling road/brake tester? a car with an lsd fitted should never go in the brake rollers, theres a chance it could damage the diff

yes it did go on the rolling brake test can the damage be repaired or is the diff f**ked.

if i take the diff out will the damage be visible.

its probably not too serious, if its a plate type diff it may just need re-setting. if this is the case, you wont be able to tell by looking at it. the brake rollers turn one wheel at a time, which an lsd cant cope with. is the lsd still working? id take it out and let a specialist look at it, and re-torque it if needed

it might be a stupid question ... but how come they test newer cars with an lsd on the brake tester,my daily bmws got an lsd and has always been tested on the rollers

i cant see a brake tester making your diff clunk/broke.some of the new tran-x diffs make a clicking noise at slow speed or corners

i wouldn't of thought brake rollers would harm it as a LSD isn't fully locked is it? i mean if it was a mig spec i could see where your coming from.

Yes your are right tran-x diffs make that noise and mine has been in for 4 years still work fine.

My Capri plate type LSD used to make a whining sound on slow cornering, turning out of junctions etc, put some Ford spec. EST-M2C118-A additive in and no noise since, not sure if it's still available though.

yes brake testers can damage lsd's if clutch type and if set to tight it won't affect a quaife type atb as they are free wheeling until put under load nearly all new lsd equiped car are mainly viscos/atb type so won't damage. the main reason tran x and sailsbury lsd's click and clank is cos there set to tight on the preload/ramp

thats cos it was built properly
