It's the use of apostrophies ' that I have always had problems with :banghead: .... can you help to explain them please Sir? :mrgreen::thumbsup:

the basics are easy Jo, but the complex ones get me every time too.

 

Basics

 

Use the apostrophe to show possession. Place the apostrophe before the s to show singular possession.

 

i.e. Jo's RS is the dog's gonads

 

Use the apostrophe with contractions. The apostrophe is always placed at the spot where the letter(s) has been removed.

 

i.e. don't in place of do not, isn't in place of is not

Well, I actually don't have a problem with that ... it's the bit where it's plural possession ... like "the teachers' (plural) books" or is that teachers's books etc. :?

I dunno, something about making the noun plural first. I have to think about it every time and usually end up getting it wrong!

What about this one then why'll I was driving down to Dorset the sign on the side of the road said snack bar ( IN NEXT LAY BYE ) Should this say LAY BY ? LOL
