Admin Mk2Jo Posted July 19, 2012 Admin Report Posted July 19, 2012 It's the use of apostrophies ' that I have always had problems with .... can you help to explain them please Sir?
Admin Vista Posted July 19, 2012 Admin Report Posted July 19, 2012 It's the use of apostrophies ' that I have always had problems with .... can you help to explain them please Sir? the basics are easy Jo, but the complex ones get me every time too. Basics Use the apostrophe to show possession. Place the apostrophe before the s to show singular possession. i.e. Jo's RS is the dog's gonads Use the apostrophe with contractions. The apostrophe is always placed at the spot where the letter(s) has been removed. i.e. don't in place of do not, isn't in place of is not
Admin Mk2Jo Posted July 19, 2012 Admin Report Posted July 19, 2012 Well, I actually don't have a problem with that ... it's the bit where it's plural possession ... like "the teachers' (plural) books" or is that teachers's books etc.
Admin Vista Posted July 19, 2012 Admin Report Posted July 19, 2012 I dunno, something about making the noun plural first. I have to think about it every time and usually end up getting it wrong! The boys' toys are all classic fords!
Admin Mk2Jo Posted July 19, 2012 Admin Report Posted July 19, 2012 I am glad I am not the only one who doesn't understand that rule
over_head_cam Posted July 19, 2012 Author Report Posted July 19, 2012 I'm the same in that respect. The basics I'm OK with, but the in depth stuff I struggle a bit with Tom - I'll give you reached lol
