bozie Posted August 3, 2012 Report Posted August 3, 2012 Has anyone tried rewiring there car themselves. I was working on my mk2 escort when I noticed the stated of the wiring cables twisted together damaged cables ect. I am an electrician so I no about wiring I no cars are a bit different but was going to give It a go. How hard is it worth giving it a go? Just wondering where I might find a wiring diagram complete with cable sizes and relay types Cheers
over_head_cam Posted August 3, 2012 Report Posted August 3, 2012 The wiring diagram in the Haynes manual has all the wire gauges I think. I've done a couple now and once you get into it they're not too difficult (and I'm a CHIPPIE lol)
Savvi Posted August 4, 2012 Report Posted August 4, 2012 Just dont use chocs blocks to join any cables, they vibrate and break in cars unlike houses that dont move much

James HPE Motorsport Posted August 4, 2012 Report Posted August 4, 2012 I rewired mine from scratch! Its actually not too bad at all and at least you can route all the wires how you want to and neaten it al up! I just looked up the spec of all the components I was running and figured out how many amps each application used, and worked it out from there. I used the new thin wall cable which is smaller and lighter than normal PVC stuff. This enabled me to go even bigger with the cable just to be over cautious!!! There are even some funky programs you can download off the internet to make a nice wiring diagram before you start!!!

craige1979 Posted August 5, 2012 Report Posted August 5, 2012 i wired mine this year and like the others say, there is so much useful info on the internet that it made it quite easy. im an overkill man and did over size all the cable but make sure you use protection as you go through the bulk head and the such so you dont chafe wires, use the right size fuses and relays.., i looked for simple diagrams by googleing, how to wire headlights, how to wire indicators etc to get a less confusing single diagram of a circuit,. others may say this was a more difficult way of doing it and uses more cable, and they may be right but this was my first time too and 6 months in i have had no wire problems at all and i have quite a lot of extras over a standard loom. also i made the mistake of not keeping an eye on a couple of wires that fell out of their pre fixed saddles and when i fitted the final spades (terminated the wires) i was left kicking myself and hd to re run a few wires or be short.. safety safety safety, you dont want a fire. good luck
bozie Posted August 5, 2012 Author Report Posted August 5, 2012 Cheers Everyone is there anywhere that would anyone would recommend to get cables and relays ect from Thanks
katana Posted August 5, 2012 Report Posted August 5, 2012 http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/V ... mepage.php Always managed to supply anything i've needed in the past
4-Door Pete Posted August 6, 2012 Report Posted August 6, 2012 If you're going bespoke with the wiring like adding extra gauges etc then you could use a neat box of tricks sold by Car Builder Solutions (CBS). They sell a module with all the relays, correctly rated fuses and flasher unit, all you do is attach the components and switches with the right thickness wire. I'm using one in my Mk1 Cortina build which originally didn't have a single fuse anywhere in the car which frankly sounds like a fire waiting to happen to me. http://www.cbsonline.co.uk/product/CBS_12_Circuit_Wiring_Module_WRMOD
bozie Posted September 2, 2012 Author Report Posted September 2, 2012 That control box looks brilliant so it's just a case of running your cables to your lights, indicators, fuel pump. Ect and that is all the relays and fuses you need. Thanks
bozie Posted September 2, 2012 Author Report Posted September 2, 2012 Has anyone else used this. Just wondering how. Other people found it Cheers

I reckon they're a great idea and good value too
