Nick Posted October 22, 2012 Report Posted October 22, 2012 So a mate of mines brother has just bought a mk3 cortina as a project. When he got it, he was told that it had a 2.2 pinto in her, he's removed the engine as he's putting an st170 lump in it out of his hot rod and I now have the chance to buy this pinto off him. What I want to know is, what would the bore size be for it to be a 2.2?
James HPE Motorsport Posted October 22, 2012 Report Posted October 22, 2012 For 2.2 it is unlikely that it is all done off of bore size. 93mm would make it 2.1 (near as dammit) but you would need to measure the stroke aswell
frankthefencer Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 Did you get the answer from your dad James????
Nick Posted October 23, 2012 Author Report Posted October 23, 2012 What roughly should the stroke be?
James HPE Motorsport Posted October 23, 2012 Report Posted October 23, 2012 Shut up frank!!! Stroke would be approximately 80.5-81mm!
Nick Posted October 25, 2012 Author Report Posted October 25, 2012 Cheers mr Harris, going to look at it at the weekend
Nick Posted October 27, 2012 Author Report Posted October 27, 2012 Went round to my mates unit today to have a look at the engine, but didn't take the head off as his brother wanted to sell it without, anyway it's a 203 block engine and he's said he was told its a 2.2 but the previous owner who he says is very respectable. He also had a set of zx9r carbs that I could buy along with a full on race head with triple cut valves, full port and polish and few other things, the heads got a fr33? Cam in it (fast road/rally) now what I want to know is; Roughly what Bhp would this engine put out if it was a full 2.2 with the said worked head and a set of zx9r carbs? And also, would it be ok for a daily driven car?
SmokeEm Posted October 30, 2012 Report Posted October 30, 2012 My Guess is 160-165ish dyno dynamics horsepower (If carbs set up) Cam will be ok but not ideal for a daily driver
Admin Vista Posted October 30, 2012 Admin Report Posted October 30, 2012 I have no idea what Bike carbs are like but my 2.2 pinto put down about 170 at the wheels when it was first set up and built.

I only guess less Scott coz this doesn't sound like a pro build - Ours was similar spec but 2.1 on 45's and was 167 D/D horses but we had a wilder cam. Is your's not on 48's? Great numbers if you still on 45's
Admin Vista Posted October 30, 2012 Admin Report Posted October 30, 2012 It's on 45's with 40mm chokes and an RL31 from Kent. I expressly didn't want a really lairy cam in it.
James HPE Motorsport Posted October 31, 2012 Report Posted October 31, 2012 Sorry for the late reply. I personally would not buy it unless the guy is willing to remove the head for you to check bore and stroke. Did the guy say who built it?
Nick Posted October 31, 2012 Author Report Posted October 31, 2012 Well for the price he's offered it me for, even if its just a 2 litre it's still cheap he didn't say who built it as it was in the car when the previous owner to him got him. What's a 203 block when it comes to it btw?

Skimmer Posted November 1, 2012 Report Posted November 1, 2012 It could be a yank 2.2 ?? and there worth jack shit compared to a standard 2.0 pinto , a few years ago a mate had a 2.3 yank pinto and i out did him with a 1.6 pinto
