i found out why my 1700 xflow lost power and died

after 6 months of it sitting in a corner i decided to strip the engine down to find

water in the oil

a section of head gasket blownout the side of the engine on pot4

all head bolts loose on one side

pistons that were to small for the bore being that there +0.090 but were loose so blocks fooked

pot 1 and 2 snapped rings

pot 2 melted piston and 3 rings in about 12 bits

pot 3 rings in about 60 bits and spring of contol ring in piston

pot 4 rings snapped in about 10 bits

lots of metal in sump

one melted and bent plug

 

plus side it has a bfc2 cam that did 20 miles spare so ill be belling that

adjustable cam pully that ill be robbing for my gp7 cam

3 good ae 0.090 pistons ( that i can get off ebay a 4th)

new oil pump (if not fooked)

new water pump

regroud crank

new followers

like new dizzy as i rebuilt it when it cut out on me

and a almost new weber 32/36

engine sounds a mess! dont you normally fit pistons as a set like con rods?

 

i may have a set of 1700 cast pistons (not sure size) siting in the garage along with 244 cam

if there +0.090 or bigger i might be intrested for building a spare or saving the over bored engine

 

that cam sounds nice inbox me what goodys you got as like to have spares to build a back up engine

 

i can get a matching piston for the 3 i have luckly but i really need to find another 711 really as its a early blobk 681 maybe that i have that im building now

ill try and get some pics of the demolission it die when i was just plodding along on a 60 i was having the give it move and more throtal and then down shiffed ing and in the end it just cut out and had to push it across a 60mph road, should have seen the smoke when i got it back into llife after 2 hours of fiddleing

hi mate, that block will still go out to 83.5mm if you want to save it, plus 0.090 is about 83.2 or thereabouts in metric.

this block is nearly 85mm i think it was when i checked. ill have a look but just a shame it did i think 17 miles when blow up but limped it 3 miles more to get it to work

not off here i think as he had a mk3 golf sold his escort to get it, i guess he built it himself even tho it was ment to be proper engine

Well , guess the bloke was telling the truth , it was rebuilt  but in a crap way .
