Have been on here a while with my cortina but recently i have been offered a 1600 sport mk2 in beige , eventually got round to going for a view today . well its been stood for a decade in a court yard and is a basket case i could put my hand through the rear floor wells flat ( my palm not my finger ) chassis rails inner wings boot floor wells as to be expected...even the rear quarter pannels under the windows had badly rotten out!!!! basicaly my question is, being a nutter iam still interested in the purchase/monster rebuild but how much would it be worth in the condition its in, as the current owner is asking abit much imho..iam not putting how much as i would like honest as possible answers. oh and the engine cranks but doesn't start !!

many thanks for any advice given

Personally I wouldn't give more than three or four hundred (if that) for a car that is as rotten as you describe. I know some people do but unless you can do absolutely 100% of the work it needs yourself (and to a high standard) and have most of the parts it needs already (or a cheap source of them) you will always end up heavily out of pocket by the time you've finished it.

Thanks for your quick response, the seller appears genuine ( farmer ) but he is on the asumption that the " log book" is worth 1k....my response to that was that to re shell a car i am on the understanding that you have to have a percentage of the original car is this correct? and also if some one was to buy it for the log book then this is classed as " ringing" and is illegal if iam not mistaken?

many thanks

I'd say that it's worth whatever it would break for

It should have a 3:54 diff there doing 150

Complete axles more

Sport interior parts are sought after 400 for the seats alone advertised at the moment

1/4 bumpers £50 min

Over riders from the bumpers same again if there ok

Lots and lots of parts that you can advertise as Rs1800 cos nothing is of a base model anymore hahaha

Panels are stupid money if it's got any good ones

Farmer probably isn't too far off (there not daft)

Look at what other cars are doing and if it's all there just start welding ;)

I don't want to break i want to rebuild it!!! tbh ive made an offer of 800 to witch i thought fair but apart from doors bonnet and boot lid all panels are pretty us. i can do all the work myself that's not an issue i just didn't want to be spending over the odds in the first place...and by no means is he daft hes got his noggin screwed on far more than me!!!...hes trying to sell it not repair it for a start!!!

As sports are rare and decent ones make strong money someone will pay silly money for a log book and tags to try to cash in, so you are up against these type of people you may need to pay £1200 for it :-)

A complete vehicle is never worth the sum of its parts or classic car breakers wouldn't have a business to run.

Perhaps not entirely comparable but price up buying a new car by assembling it from parts. It'll probably cost you twice as much (or more) as buying the complete vehicle new.

Thanks for the replies people !!! i can see what you mean about the weighing up of the cost in parts etc etc, also its beige!!!! i know not to everyones taste but due to this i expect original beige ones are thin on the ground maybe!? Thanks for the inspirational pics trust me if this one was half as good as your initial project i wouldnt be in the slightest bit worried all along the rear half window on the drivers side is none existant its that bad you open the door and have to lift it to shut it!!!!!......i am basicly thinking about going to weld in braces before it gets recovered so it stays in one piece!!! i made an offer of 800 but we will see on the out come!! i just feel sorry for it just sitting there slowly crumbling away into the under growth!! but i spose on some things you need to draw a line as its bad very bad !! could do with a re shell if iam honest but i would like to try and save the one its got...fortunatly the farmer also loves old fords and was ogling my cortina ( must update my thread must be a year ago i did it last sorry ) and was asking of my intensions ie to break sell on or restore and when i said restore for me to drive he looked happy so hope all goes well!! and or my sanity does not come back any time soon lol

Wow, that sounds like a serious project!!!!!!

Sometimes what something is worth can also be worked out by how much money it needs to fix.

A resto will never be worth original, an saying parts are worth eBay dollar don't mean they will, especially if they are

Damaged due to the elements (rust)

£800 doesn't seem wrong for the car although I wouldn't want to rebuild a car 'that bad' myself.

Just make sure it's not sentiment of seeing the car often and slowly rot away that's not fueling your buying.

Then again mate, you will do what you feel is right for you.

If you don't get it, you'll find one better an if you do good luck and I would love to see another build in projects an another osf come from the grasps of the crusher ykt

im going thru same thing with a mk2 van, if i dont buy it i know it,ll just sit there and disintegrate, but when you consider initial price 1k then all panels it needs its just not viable, i can weld but never taken on anything as big a project, im in the same boat as you, i feel your pain brother lol

If you get it, keep it beige. You're right they are thin on the ground and a nice colour. So many orange, yellow, blue and green out there! (not that there's anything wring with those) nice to see a 2 door in a rarer colour.

Good luck!

I agree with that, a beige Sport looks good. Personally I wouldn't go over £800.  Whats the interior like, Sport trimed seats are hard to find but the rest is the same as other MKII's so shouldn't be too hard to source.  What reg/year is it?
