ok guys I know that shows are still goin well but I feel the the old ford scene has peaked.. old school fords aren't the cheap fun toys they once were, you cant take them out and park them and leave them to go shopping for fear of them being nicked, you cant leave them on your drive in case they are towed off by some scumbag.....if your after buying one your gona pay a small fortune more if its a mk1 or mk2 2dr escort!!!...if you want to buy parts people are asking the earth...of the few mates I know who have one they either have them hidden away haven't worked on them for ages or cant afford too or are selling them......I myself have 3 escorts and have spent a hell of a lot of money on them over the last few years....so I was just wondering what your thoughts are????.....

Well there's certainly not as many people on the forum as there used to be, Fb is commonly used now you may get a quicker response on there !!!

In general I agree with you prices are raising all the time and no one has spare cash to attend many of the shows ?

Your right on all counts, but the cars are as popular as ever and not just with 30/40 somethings, just look at the 2 lads from this very forum featured in classic ford mag this month. I think the scene is in safe hands with yonguns like these two.

There's just less money about than there was and less cars I think that's why the classic mags are starting to add more later stuff unfortunately to keep the scene going there's not much alternative

theres a few that will be able to afford to buy and run a old ford with the help of good mates and family but to most the cars are out of reach..i know theres still the rare find to be had and the lucky family owed cars passed down..... but people don't want to pay £1500 for sheds of mk2 4drs or £5000 for tatty 2drs......but im also not just talking about the prices id like to ask the mods if they have seen a reduction in usage/traffic on this site???....another site I used to use a lot seems to have died a death in the last year or so.....

We have a FB page because that is what the modern man/woma.n demands so we offer the forum and FB and twatter (I don't know how that works though lol). The old Ford scene for OSF is just as busy .... take last week's summer show for example ...dodgy weather forecast but still we got 150 cars turn up to support us ... the cars are getting pricey but there are still affordable ones to be found. As for leaving them on the driveway .. depends where you live I think ... back in the 80's they were quite nickable but more easily replaced .... we have been around for nearly 10 years as a club and still have fantastic support and turnout at shows big and small all over the UK ... big up the old skool! We love our members! ! Lol :D

I think that too often people base their observations of 'scenes' on their own personal feelings. I've been out of OSF and all the associated things for a while now but I realise it's still there, it's just me that hasn't been.

Exactly that.

The fact that old ford prices are still on the increase shows that it hasnt peaked at all.

It got too expensive for me, and life got in the way! Becoming a career mechanic took away a lot of the joy of working on the cars too. My first post here in a long, long time. It's changed a lot!

prices recently are taking the pi## i for one could not afford to own my mk1 escort if i didnt have the skills to rebuld it myself from a cheap wreck, for most it seems to be all about the "scene" and scenes change. but for me iv always liked the old bangers from childhood. i took mine down to a local car meet the other week and for the 1st time i honestly felt like a real old fuc#=r and im only 32!!!. 90% of them didnt even know what it was, they were more interested in each others speakers than the cars.

That's why we have to keep meeting , not enough local meets for my liking , lets use them or lose them.

I don't think it has finished / peaked yet , yes they are expensive but if you realy want to own / run one you will find a way too , less fags or time in the pub maybe !! ??

There is young blood comming into our scene , they are a bit in awe of us old gits, so we need to try and give them sound advise !

A lot of us grew up with these cars and its second nature to us , but not them ;)

Old fords will always be around ,

It's part of being British ! Lol

i totaly agree with you there buddy, i had a mk1 escort for my first car after passing my test in 1988, then i moved onto hot hatches and such like got another escort which was a complete screamer of a car, and sold that when my first child arrived and now they are teenagers and my youngest chil my son is now 7 and he loves his cars i have bit the bullet and bought the one i have now and was the dearest car i have ever bought, and my god how the prices have changed

Ive been looking in the classifieds of CF Mag from the late 90's earlers 00's and i cant believe im seeing mk1, mk2 escort 2 doors for around £900 and not rot boxes either, if only i knew now back then how much it would change! Saying that though, even though prices are high i honestly can say i wouldnt own anything else! i love the scene!

pretty new to the escort side of things but had and restored a couple of VW's and parts aint half as expensive as escort parts because there is a lot of company's making aftermarket parts which keeps prices quite low for the vw scene when it comes to second hand parts for escorts a lot of ebay sellers seem to be charging the earth for stupid things because it's escort and thinking people will pay

seems theres a few in the escort side of things there just to make as much as possible on stuff rather than be there for the love of the car

Posted

I don't think the scene is on its a### it just needs refreshing some of the shows are just the same old every year, and yes the escorts are sky high but you can still pick up a cheap 100e to play with for example

I think Phil is right, it's down to the people, things in life change and priororities change, my escort is still locked up in the garage and as soon as I get some spare time I will get back on it but the scenen is not dead at all! :)

i don't think the scene is dead or indeed dying, it's just evolving, years ago we all drove old fords because they were easy to find, cheap to fix and fun to drive, plus many 'upgrades' were straightforward due to fords parts interchangeability ( how many makers used the same bellhousing bolt pattern fom 1959 right up to the zetec for example ? ). nowadays the cars are rarer partly due to the 90's scrappage scheme, plus people are re living their youth on adult salaries. back in the day i could get an english diff of any ratio in any breakers yard for a few quid, i have just bought a 3.54 and paid twice what i earned a week back then, and it still needs bearings!

i am glad someone has mentioned the vw scene as the same thing has happened, where people used to buy a car, lower it, put some nice wheels on and go out messing about with their mates, people now find a car, restore it, modify it and cherish it, what used to be fun in most cases is now  an investment. things have moved on. many cars in the scene now are finished better and engineered better than when they were new. the standard has risen and so have the prices, when the demand falls off so will the prices, but i am not sure they will, i would rather do 20 k on a nicely built and finished old ford than buy a new car that despite being comfortable and efficient is anonymous and will shed half it's value in the first couple of years. as long as old fords exist there will be a scene, i am sure of that!

cheers, ian.
