I hope you dont change the look too much. You lucky you can put any Kent engine in it an it will looks pretty close to what it was originally but have heaps more power.

There are photos of my Twincam somewhere on here when I first joined under the introduction section I think.

Im Still undecided what im going to do with the body work and the look of the car. Thinking to keep front panel as it is but just loose the chrome on the seals and around the windows. The black rear panel i could wrap with vinyl instead of painting so gives me the option after paint, the coach-line and side repeaters are both 1300e features that im yet to decided if to keep or not. Yeah no palns to change from the 1700 Kent, other than maybe a rebuild to get a little more power out of it.

I think it looks perfect as it is.

So is the general consensus that vented discs to replace the solids and a 4 pot calliper upgrade are considered sympathetic modifications?  When you guys visit an RS or AVO concourse there, how many still have solid discs and m16s?

I have a Mk3 Cortina, not an Escort. I originally changed to Capri 2.8 vented discs and Wilwood Midilite 4-pots. But lately I've removed the WIlwoods as I felt they looked too modern and I've replaced them with original M16s with a spacer kit and sintered pads. It seemed the right thing to do but the M16s must weigh two or three times more. :(

I'm not gonna wade in to deep with this one as I'm a serial vehicle modder - my first RS2 back in 1980 got the treatment and my '68 Mini Cooper 'S' so I can't lecture anyone but I'd say if the parts were around in the period the car was built they should be considered acceptable. So Capri vented discs fine with spacered M16's or Princess calipers but anything alloy wouldn't be period? Personally I like the above Yellow Mex WITH the black back panel - body colour just looks 'ordinary'!

Yes the extra weigh of the M16 and Princess calipers is significant. 3.5kgs and 4.1kgs respectively. I always hear about less unsprung weight is better but never quite understood how it is better?

I tried spacing M16s once and had flexing occur so have been worried by vented disks without properly designed for that purpose calipers every since.

Ahhhh so your one of those that like building those group 4 franken Escorts? Wake up the villagers with burning torches chase you out of town or an RS concourse should we? Its all good really, Each too their own I dont mind others doing it I just know that I feel guilty when I go too far and waste more money pulling back yet cant explain why.

Princess Calipers are quite bland and lack any of the bling that the alloy calipers have. They virtually go unnoticed on the car I have used them on. I hear they are bad because of their excess weight although not sure how its affecting the handling.

I think its the combo of the black roof and black rear section on Texr2000s yellow Escort that gives it a unique mean look. I do like it.

I have Princess 4pots with Vents on mine with 2.8 struts, this is nothing to do with looking original, (even though they do look like could have been factory) its mainly because when i put the car together coming up to 10 years ago that was more what people used. M16 and Princess over winwood and Hispec. Also the fact they were alot cheaper back then, i paid £150-180 for 2.8 struts with calipers on and new braided lines budding on ebay. If i was building my car now I'm not sure if it would have them on over a newer kit mainly down to price.

Thanks for the comments, the postive coments have caused me to think more about how it will look after a mini resto.....

Off topic re Unsprung weight. Its simple physics - it takes more force to move / lift a heavy weight. So the heavier wheel, tyre, hub, brake disc and caliper combination the slower that corner of the car will react to a bump giving a bumpier ride. Effectively the car gets lifted instead of just the lower strut and then once it is moving it takes more spring force and damping to stop it moving.

This explains it.....http://www.formula1-dictionary.net/unsprung_weight.html

my car is almost factory fresh but not original.

was an 1100 but now a 1600 over bored etc.

sits on RS steels ,twin coach line, rear spoiler

FORD front grill,1/4 bumpers, rear tramp bars

and spaxs rear Monroe inserts front, used lowering

blocks for rear and cut and lowered strut cups to lower front

I would go old skool bolt in rear cage and small extinguishers

maybe front spoiler.

and I guess your right about shows ,old fellas etc crawl all over it

because they remember having one but the young lads love gp4

me I like either and yes at some stage may even mod my own

although she is a worthless lower model she is mine

kenny

probably the main two reasons my car is the way it is

1. its different to the usually highly modded cars

2. im too old at 46 to get the shit shook out of me on road runs :)

Thanks so much for that, I was always curious about it. Princess calipers arent going to help then with handling then being even heavier than standard M16s.
