don't see the point in having them as they wont stop much dust with that size of mesh , an unneccecery expense if you ask me

The mesh isnt the actual filter. You may not be able to see it from that photo but the mesh is just the holder for a sponge type element thats on the inside.

ah yes plenty dust in Australia, hardly any in Scotland , guess what " its raining again

Yes the dust is bad and you dont realise how much so till you use oiled air filters. I just cleaned the K&Ns and the cleaning fluid came out very muddy. The sad part is that since I last cleaned them the car hasnt moved and is under a carport and under a car cover! Damned if I know how the filters still got dirty.

Are k&N the Filter of choice on other Carby stuff in Aus then?

Yes they are a popular choice here mainly due to the American derived V8 crowd. Small stuff like Escorts dont really have a huge following, the yobbos here (your term would be boy racers) go for all the big lump American V8 engines from Ford and GM that were put in our locally produced Falcons and Commodores. With that American Engine connection the availability of American K&N stuff becomes more clear. We have a locally produced Ramflo air filters that have been around for decades but they are absolute rubbish. They hardly allow more air in due to the thick front meshing and the air they do let it doesnt filter any dirt whatsoever. So K&N was the best alternative but they really gotten so silly with their pricing its a bit of a turn off, not to mention having had mine shrink Im not convinced of the quality.

I have seen these Chinese look alikes http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2xDellorto-DHLA-Weber-DCOE-stainless-air-filter-83mm-alternative-K-N-AFDCOE83x2-/261079583165?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cc98e49bd but I try to avoid chinese parts on my Escorts if at all possible.

thatl be the dust fairies mate lol

More like the dust demons! The upside is that it never snows here and is usually sunny so we dont get the rust that guys get there. I cant believe the shells people rescue there when I look at the photos of the restoration pages on this forum. Its amazing and really skilled what they do. Here cars with virtually no rust would end up in the wreckers if it had more than one dented panel. Such a waste.

Though expensive, have you looked into the Pipercross 600 series airbox with a cone filter on the end of the cold air feed. It will cut down on induction noise but safer than a sponge type filter.

http://www.thepipercrossshop.co.uk/pipercross-px600-airboxes-including-feed-pipe_p23378572.htm

Thats an interesting type as well. Would you just run the pipe forward to collect air?

Actually I quite like the standard RS1600 airbox. Im not sure if it would fit the Lotus engine but it has a neat and subtle period look too it. I have just never seen one for sale.

Sure they could be modified to fit but cant imagine a RS1600 airbox is easy to get hold off. other option would be looking at other 60's/70's80's cars that had twin 40's/45's and see if they would fit or could be fitted. maybe something with the Fiat twin cam

They arent easy at all to find. I have been searching for many years and never have seen one for sale. I have seen 2 RS1600s in real life and neither had the original airbox fitted. So technically apart from an RS1600 sales brochure I collected many years ago I have never seen one.

This is the way forward if you want to Grp4 and make a filter box. It's the future of street racing and all rally cars...

attachicon.giffingers tin.jpg

You know even before reading what you had typed I saw the photo of the tin and thought to myself he that would make a great basis for a twin weber air filter casing! The contents is fitting too as I often give my cars the finger when working on them!

The Pipercross airboxes come either with a filter in the box itself or you can buy one without and add a cone filter to the induction pipe that you would run to the front of the car.

I do remember Practical Performance Car making an airbox from an oblong plastic planter.

Thats a sizable amount of shrinkage! K&N's are warranted for life and that surely isn't normal - try asking K&N for replacements, you've nothing to lose?

probably not mate unless you have a bill of sale

This is a big thankyou to Katana. As you wrote what have you got to loose as I didnt know K&N had a lifetime warranty, so I wrote to K&N in the USA and sent them photos and they mentioned that some of their older filters had a plastic they no longer use because it did shrink. Even without a receipt (Although I did still have the boxes and sent them a photo so they could get the model number off) this arrived by Fedex today, no charge! Most impressed with their correspondence and help to find the right elements. A win, you dot get many of those!
