Its been wait too long since I even started the Twincam woops. Doing the usual prep draining the old fuel, changing the oil etc, and went to clean the K&N air filters I have on the standard 40mm Webers. When I took the filters off I noticed they had shrunk within the base and top plate. They arent very flexible either hard as rocks. So time to get new filters. I have traditionally used K&N but when I looked around they are really expensive these days. What other good ones are out there what ones do you use? Some of the plastic fluro coloured ones wouldnt look that good on a period Twincam. Thanks

same happened to mine mate I chucked the k@n filters after they started falling to bits ,now running open trumpets better sound anyway

I don't run filters either. As said better noise and more power :)

But arent you worried dust and dirt is going straight into your engines?

In a word no. :) oh and dt36, don't mean to worry you but from your pic it appears someone's nicked your real carbs and replaced then with something off one of those dreadful two wheeled contraptions ;)

It's not quite as dry here as it is on Oz so dust isn't the problem for us that you guys have. I used to use filter socks on mine as I haven't room for filters but they absorb petrol spits and are a fire risk in my opinion. Since then I've also been open trumpets

Agreed, they look quite flow restrictive, I bet if you were to do a couple of runs on the rollers one with, one without, you'd see a difference

Haha, yes the little toerags had it clean away on their heels with the injection head and turbo.

On the plus side now, Missus DT36 puts the kettle on when I'm about half a mile away from our house on my way back...

Ahhh yes. I forget your country is washing out to sea while ours is blowing out to sea. Even when you cant see the dust in the air or anything you get heaps of dirt especially if you drive to the country. I remember just driving to see friends and back one day and looked at my K&N filter and the dust had stuck to the oil of the filter and looked like caked on mud. Even when you're not driving and in Sydney not in the country or anything I woke up and looked at my while Mk2 and it appeared some smart sh*t had splattered mud all over the car in the driveway. What had actually happened was there was a dust storm during the night and the dew forming on the car attracted all the dust in round blobs that grew till it looked like mud splashed over the car. What made it worse is that it was at a time of water restrictions and there was a ban on washing your car. Feel free to send some of your water this way if you like!

So for my Twincam I think I wont get away without filters just to be safe. I will probably sell it one day so no filters would probably horrify some potential buyer.

Thanks guys, I'll give those a miss then.  :)

yeh I mind of a rolling road test with the mesh filters where the car ran like a bag o s--t ,when the rolling road guy removed them it totally transformed the car , if I mind right it ran 8bhp better without them

i run a piper cross filter on my 45's the one that has both carbs in the same flter. i was told this helps keep the air charge the same going into the carbs rather than a filter on each. had my pinto set up on rollers last week without the filter, then once finished we did another power run with filter on and didnt make much difference at all to power.

I dont run filters on mine but fit the pipercross foam ones when in the garage over the winter. Not a fan of them as had it pop back through the carbs and had them catch fire.

Shrunken filters  and the trumpets off my Twincam that arent as big as the others on this thread, Im feeling a bit inadequate!

Thats a sizable amount of shrinkage! K&N's are warranted for life and that surely isn't normal - try asking K&N for replacements, you've nothing to lose?

That was one of the reason I went with the metal plated K&N type because the old girl does flame back on occasions. There appears to be Ramair filters everywhere like your Pipercross but am worried they may catch fire. You may think they shrunk because of this problem but they shrunk during an extended period of no use whatsoever. So they definitely arent heat shrunk.

I didnt know that. It would be incredible if they honour that. They are a reasonable age though and I dont have the receipt or anything. I wonder if they would replace them?

I was looking at these metal mesh covers - they might be a good compromise but I'm not sure... especially as they work out quite expensive for what they are. :(

If you look closely on that Mk1 Mexico episode "For the Love Of Cars" these are actually the filters it has on it.
