I just renewed my insurance via A-Plan and have to redo my agreed valuation. i been looking on ebay the last month or so and at a loss what price i should push for. I think along the lines of what it would cost to replace my car like for like mod for mod.

to give a idea

 

1974 solid 2door 1300e

blueprint 150BHP+ 1700 xflow on 40's that cost around 3k to be built 6 years ago

-2" 2.8 struts with princess calipers Mex ARB

original interior but with rs turbo recaros

etc

 

currently its insured for £7500 but im not sure if i should lift it a bit

I had the car since i was 16 so been a good 10 years so i cant go by the price i paid, problem is the prices they are on ebay are all over the place and many overpriced. i was offered 9k for the car around a year ago but it wasnt for sale and isnt for sale so do i bare in mind someone was willing to pay 9k for it? i dont know if its really worth 9k, then again do i think a mex is worth 20k......

I set mine at 10k, so as not to need an inspection etc. If it got stolen I couldn't replace it for that. If I stuffed it, then I would try to haggle a buy back and rebuild it. However, yours looks mint and probably over that on today's market.

Mine is solid and clean but not quite mint, not been painted or restored for 15 years so now has a little bubble on passenger door and a little under fuel tank but a little weekend body work could tidy it up. was a original old boy spec 1300e when i got it and underside is thick of waxoil which i think has helped it.

 

I would ideally just set a price and send it with pics like previous years but prices are getting silly, people pay more than they are worth which makes the insurance value complicated.

Mine was anything over 10k and I had to have an independant inspection valuation. Because I work abroad a lot, this was too much hassle for me, so plumped at 9,999k with pictures.

 

There is no way you could replace yours today for 10k, so you might need to go for a valuation. Would be a niche in the market for someone who knows their cars to offer this service at the shows.

There's not many good Es around. Yours is sound with a good solid engine. It would sell for £10k today easy. The value will go up from there, for insurance value I'd go for £14k. I had my standard Wheeler Dealer at £12k insurance value.

Given we are talking about possible differences in valuations of £'000s then I am struggling to understand why you wouldn't simply pay a couple of hundred quid for a proper inspection and valuation?

 

Seems penny wise and pound foolish to me.

 

To OP, spend the money and get a proper valuation and then sleep easy.

If Im not mistaken I think you may find Texr2000 is renewing all this stuff online as he is around my side of the world and the car around the other! It may not be all that easy to pop the car in for a person evaluation. LOL Thank goodness for the internet. Well ....... sometimes.

Thanks for your comments.

As Rally Pack said at them moment im not in the UK and the car is locked up in a garage in the UK, in preparation i took some pics a few days before i left but now looks like going to have to get a family member to get a MOT on it as insurance value will drop without as 'not in road legal state'  and i dont want them having any loop holes.

 

Oddly Thrashermax i did think about yours as a comparison to mine to get a idea of value (maybe cos the colour as welll haha) if yours was valued at 12k at time on show with 1600 what would it be worth with the 1700? spec for spec they are very similar but i would guess yours is a little cleaner being that was painted only a short while ago. yours was a 1.1/1.3 base, does a 1300e attract slightly more value when no longer standard?

 

who would be the best person to speak to about a valuation? do OSF offer it?

 

And i guess what it's worth and what people are willing to pay are very different....

 

Like most people on here im sure would agree if it was stolen no amount of money would be enough to replace it.

I am in exactly the same predicament as you, Mate. Working abroad and car locked up in my garage at home.  Inspection wise for valuation is a nightmare for me too, what with being away.

 

I am home for a month in July and have a few little jobs to do on it. Even though my MOT isn't due until September, I am going to have to get it done towards the end of July while I'm home.  Will lose maybe 2 months on this, but at least it's done and I don't have to ask anyone else to do it for me.

One of my favourite cars on the forum this one. I cant understand why my Twincam is virtually the same with square headlights and blackend rear apron except is orange and it doesnt look anywhere near as nice as this one.

Cheers. Must be your ride hight and wheels as about only difference. Bonnet is back down now was only seeing if it helped cooling over the summer.

With the 1700 xflow mine sold at £14.1k... for insurance I would have been looking at £15-16k.. the E is a special beast, go for £16k insurance value. The insurance valuation should always be higher than the market IMHO.

I think i may need to call them and have a chat about a value and how much before i need a valuation.....Market value lol what the hell is the market value. waht would people on here class as adverage vaules for Escorts at the momment

Wow Mk1s fetch big bucks over there. The last offer of got for my Twincam about 4 years ago was the equivalent of 11,000 pounds which I didnt think was that bad. Its getting to the point the average person cant even afford these cars that were priced originally for everyone.

Yeah they are becoming a little price over here, 14k could buy you a high spec brand new Fiesta.... have you seen what price some wrecks and ruff ones are selling for?

This car at Cleevewood garage is up for £65k but has been for sale for a long time and I have heard questions about its authenticity

You know your currency conversion quite well! The offer was for $20k AUS. The guy let me look around his workshop to show me where it would live to make sure it was going to a good home. But I say no in the end. I wasnt ready to part with it back then. I always thought if someone came along with a Mk1 RS2000 for a swap I would consider it though.

Mines not a minter but its not rubbish either. But Australian Twincams dont fetch the same money as the UK ones even though they are identical apart from having coloured paint and fake woodgrain trims. Shame for the kind of money over there I could have a deposit for a house if I sold it.

i ws in Aus only a few months ago so not to hard to work out, was thinking a mint mk1 RS2000 deal is odd but then again u are a fan of the pinto mk2 so a Mk1 Rs2000 would probably work out a good replacement.

 

I would probably agree the Cortina is one of the most valuable but i would guess the early mk1 pre airflow with a link rear is the highest of all the cortinas and post airflow being worth more than a mk2 Lotus. not alot in it between the values of Lotus Cortinas and Escorts. i seen more Lotus Cortinas than TC escorts but hard to be sure how many are real as Lotus replicas are as common as Mex/RS2000 replicas.

In the UK, mk1 Lotus Cortinas and Mk1 Escort Twin Cams are roughly on par in terms of desirability and value, Mk2 Lotus Cortinas are also desirable and valuable but not nearly as much so as either the mk1 Lotus Cortina or the Escort mk1 Twin Cam.

It seems odd until you think we never got Mk1 RS2000s in Australia so they are rarer here than Twincams, I have only seen 2 in my life and one of those was 25 years ago. Also the taller diff, and the Pintos easy going traits in our hot summers make it a better tourer. If the ambient temperature is above 35 degrees Celsius the fuel pre-atomises and the engine coughs and splutters. Add the complexity of tuning, synching of carburettors and tappet adjustments that I cannot do because you need a rage of shims. Im waiting for leads to come from the UK let alone if it needs more specialised parts like a water pump etc. Pintos are common unstressed Cortina engines and just go without fuss and easy to tune and I can by a waterpump from you at Repco. Having a Mk2 Pinto engined car It would allow a streamlining of service parts etc.

 

Well ok I will admit it I really do like the stripes.

Thats interesting. I always thought Mk1 Lotus Cortinas were most valuable because they were actualy made in the Lotus factory while the Mk2s and Escorts were just made at Ford. Some TV show I was watching Car SOS I think it was claimed a Mk1 Lotus Cortina once sold for 180 thousand pounds!!!

 

Trivia - The most paid for a Mk2 Escort was around three hundred thousand (something ridiculous like that anyways) US dollars and was a 1.3L,

Even in the UK pinto bits would be easier and cheaper to get hold of if just standard stuff, a family friend has a old Elan and reason its sitting and been sitting for years is because needs a engine rebuid, he got another engine from somewhere and wasnt much better. he wants a rebuild with a bit more power but just waiting to have the cash to get it built as to many stories of huge bills.
