Jon_d_h Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 Right, I can't make my mind up which way to go with what engine I want in my mk2 escort. I have bought an st170 engine and was planning on fitting it with jenvey throttle bodies on a type 9 gearbox. I have always dreamed of having a cosworth turbo powered mk2 but don't fully know what is involved with fitting it. I don't want to modify the engine bay massively. Would I use the type 9 gearbox with the cosworth engine? What mods are needed in the engine bay to fit the cosworth? As my car is bare metal so need to make any mods before painting. Are there any build diaries of anyone who has built a cosworth mk2 as I can't find any. Would you say the cost of either an st170 and a cosworth would be similar? Thanks
Admin Vista Posted June 21, 2014 Admin Report Posted June 21, 2014 Click the link under my Sig for my build diary of a Cosworth powered mk2 van. You can use the T9 on the back of a YB turbo but it's not really advisable. Engine bay mods for the YB are minimal as it's essentially a 16valve pinto and the pinto was available in the mk2 anyway. The issue is more finding space for and then mounting all the necessary extras to make it run.
Skimmer Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 By using a Cossie YB and T5 there is no engine bay modifications though the tunnel will have to be made bigger (unless an auto shell) but as there is plenty of peddle / foot room you dont need to worry about it looking out of place .....off course the battery will have to be relocated but most put them in other places even with pinto conversions...
DT36 Posted June 22, 2014 Report Posted June 22, 2014 Saw a nice mod last year at Ford Fair on a white MK2 where the guy had located the washer bottle under the front right wheel arch to make some space. All you then saw was the filler hole/cap on the top inner wing.
skeeter Posted June 22, 2014 Report Posted June 22, 2014 If you started with a really sound base car what order of magnitude of cost to this type of conversion are you looking at? S
Skimmer Posted June 26, 2014 Report Posted June 26, 2014 Realistically its the ''how long is a piece of string'' answer as body mod wise very little but the main cost is obviously engine , box , loom then theres the brake upgrade and yes thats a must along with any suspension mods thats down to you and the back axle and the fitting of an LSD .....like i said you can spend as much as it costs for a basic conversion or go for the full monty ......best bet in my personal opinion buy yourself a 2wd cossie complete and use that as the donor for alot of the parts even doing the disc conversion on the rear brakes ........ If you started with a really sound base car what order of magnitude of cost to this type of conversion are you looking at?S
texr2000 Posted June 27, 2014 Report Posted June 27, 2014 AS Above ^^^ when i thought about doing a cossy mk2 4door my pan was to find a 2wd saph running and bu that run it aroun make sure engine and box were good etc then also play with spec of it while in the saph then pull it out clean i up and fit to the escort then sell off the cossy bits i didnt need. this was a good few years ago (maybe 5 years) when 3-5k could get you a car, and i even looked at dodgy clean car for 2k. hard to pay £1500 for a engine that 'was a good runner when in car'. in the end it never happened. Same with my caterham i needed a new 160VVC 1.8 kseries, with a engine with a bad history like the kseries, there was no way i was paying £5-600 for a Engine loom and ECU when i can buy a MG ZR for £800-1000 running with T&T that i can make sure is ok
theloudboy Posted June 27, 2014 Report Posted June 27, 2014 You don't have to use the turbo on the Y/B you could go N/A instead and use a type 9 it goes in with a hammer
steved35 Posted June 30, 2014 Report Posted June 30, 2014 I have a st170 in my escort no vvt cat cams head work and ATpower tbs ( there a lot shorter than others so I can run a filter aprox 220bhp
