Thermostat or not !

Hopefully getting the engine back in the weekend, but all though cooling is some times an issue your views on running without a thermostat !!

Simple, a heater is a lifestyle choice and isn't a requirement. Whereas regulating your engine temperature correctly is a necessity.

I ditched my heater but have to admit I don't run with a thermostat either.

Even without a thermostat the water will still get warm,

Yea but the stat is there to keep the water in the block on start up from cold in order to bring the engine upto operating temperature to prevent premature wear.

 

Engine builders who set new engines up on a dyno tend to run with no stat in as the engines run seriously hot with not much air flow so the lack of stat helps flow through the block.

once the engine is up to temp the stat isnt doing much anyway so i dont see over all its going to make a difference, other than a slight flow restriction. to compensate for the loss of a heater i would go for a bigger rad to have a much water in the system as possible and a good electric fan.

 

With all cooling systems if your engine is struggling to stay cool when moving or in traffic something in the system isnt up to the job. i went for a pretty big alloy rad thats probably a bit over kill for the road but with a good temp choice stat the two work well to keep engine at a nice 80'c and a strong elec fan to control things when in traffic.

Now I know,,,,anyhow I've got one,,,and a heater,

didn't get a lot of luxuries in the old cars but a heaters a must,then I use mine all year

Should run with a stat or at least a modified one. Without it can cause hot spots to form due to altered water flow, minis are buggers for this and cause problems on number 4 cylinder over heating. We always took the center part out and just left the outer ring in which never gave us any problems. Hope this helps.

A few of us have had this topic under debate... lot of different views...

got a larger alloy rad in with 2 electric fans . 1st cuts in at around 80 and the 2nd to a switch if needed....

 

any way... me got the rolling stones on LOUD while Olives out shopping, just put all my washing out and its foooocking pissing down....back in the gagage then

Ran the x-flow with no stat as it warmed up double quick, also the z-tec is no slouch in the getting hot dept but runs a stat.

I have been told that the stat helps with turbulation in the flow of water which is what Gearbox100 stated, so maybe keep the stat but bin the centre ,its nothing to do with the heater side of things , our cars only get used when its hot(ish) anyway so its more keeping cool than warming up.
