Digital Cameras

I'm after a new digital camera, and I want to invest in an SLR so I can fit a zoom lens. Does anyone on here have one? What make is it and would you recommend it?

My mate who has 5 Canon digital cameras which range between £500 - £5000 has recently (December) bought a Nikon D40.

 

He is an amateur photographer but he knows his stuff and it is most unlike him to move away from Canon but he has gone for the D40 and says it is absolutely superb.

 

Cost is around £400 which is not bad either.

Cheers Jo. I was looking at the D40 earlier today. Any chance you could ask him if it's any good for 'action' shots? I've only used point and shoot digital cameras and there's a two second lag between pressing the button and the shutter doing something.

 

I've got a 35mm film Minolta 7000i with a 200m zoom lens that I used to take to motorsport events, which I loved and produced some great photos, so if it's as good as that I'll be happy

 

edit:

I've just found the camera I have on ebay, along with some of the accessories. I've got a couple more than that and they're all boxed. It's gone for £193 so I might put mine on and put it towards a digital.

lol ..... sounds like you've got the Z1 or later model like me .... and it is a fab camera I'm thinking of upgrading to the Canon S3 IS cos it's got 6MP and 12 x zoom which is even better for the motorsport shots.

 

I'll ask him about the D40 cos he uses different cameras for different shots from close up macro shots to fast motorsport ..... leave it with me and I'll get back to you

Thanks Jo. I was looking at the Z1 for my first digital when it came out few years ago, but it looked a bit 'cheap', especially the silver one (don't tell me that's the one you've got!)

The father in law has a Sony SLR thing it cost him around £800 and its superb quality

i use a fuji film s5000,few years old now not a clue how much it costs as its not mine

its always set to the lowest quality settin so i can get more pics on a memory cards
