ID my capri

I bought my first restoration project a few weeks back and it's registered as a 1979 on iris plates and the windscreen has the reg D92GVC I also have the chassis number which is GAECWE13492, can anyone help me find out what model it is

A D plate capri could be one of three models that were still in production then, a Laser, a 2.8i Special or a Brooklands 2.8i. If it were either of the latter I assume you'd have mentioned that it was a V6 car so I reckon it's either a 1.6 or a 2.0 Laser.

Oh I am sorry it is a V6 alright

I checked a couple of site and entered the English Reg and it shows  up as a Ford Capri Tickford

Then it's a rare car indeed. 2.8i Tickfords are limited edition conversions available from new. Any pics of it?

Actually, something doesn't ring true here. A D plate from the UK is a 1987 registration but you say the car was first registered in 1979? Tickford capris weren't available then and neither were 2.8i capris. Is it an Essex V6 with carbs or a cologne V6 with injection?

Your chassis no checks out to a German built car produced in April 1979. I reckon the windscreen is from a later car that was broken for parts or have up its windscreen for some reason

That's why I was asking you guys because it's the reg number that I got off the windscreen I went checking and it came up as one thing and the number plate on the car says another

The pics you originally posted links to don't give a lot of detail on the car, from the interior door trim it looks like an early mk3 and could be a 3.0s or ghia. The chassis number you posted only serves to hgive information on the country and factory of build and the year and month of build. You can't tell any more than that

Right thanks anyway sure, i must try and locate the book for it as it was a deal done over the phone with a guy and I just loaded it out of the yard.

 

I will be starting a thread in the restoration section there soon so if there is anything that's spotted along the way then let me know.

 

Is there any other stamps or markings along the car itself that would indicate what model it is.

take a picture of chassis plate as full item and all the numbers mean something

then check engine number against chassis plate and look for stamped body numbers

all tell a story

Take a pic from the id tag ( riveted in front of the radiator ). There are two but need the one with the details.

With this I can identify your Capri.

 

Edit, according to the pics in the resto room, it looks like the body is not V6. V6 body's had extra bracing welded on several places which don't show up on your pics.

Interior looks like an S model but your front seats are not the correct ones. Should have had Recaro front seats. But it could be that somebody had had some basic GL seats reclined with cloth from the original seats.

 

Its always a surprise with 30+ year old Fords.

Remember Officially Ford never made a mk3. Its a Mk 2 facelift. There are only a few country's in the world that calls for a mk3.

Germany itself don't recognise the mk3 and says  mk2 1974 - 1987.

No, it's a mk3 whatever they call it in Europe. There are clear differences between the two models and calling it. Mk2 over here will just get you strange looks.
